and because I had heard it takes a pretty simplistic/rosy view on racial stuff

And that was partially true to a point, some stuff had me rolling my eyes.

But watching the two main characters interact was great. So many great character moments.

Dunno if this movie was Best Picture worthy but damn if it wasn't entertaining as hell.

Yeah, I think a lot of the criticism comes from the politics around the movie rather than the actual movie, which is a decent trip.
