Afghanistan has literally been at war for most of its history. I know people like to shit on the Americans for sticking their nose where it doesnt belong, but yeah. Go read the Wikipedia on the country, theres been ongoing wars there since the 1700s.

Afghanistan wasn't in a good position when we actually got there, especially not for women. It's not like America upended them, but is more like America stopped them from collapsing by propping them up for a couple of decades. Before 2001, there were active political assassinations and the Taliban/Al Qaeda had a ton of influence in the region.

Obviously it's not any better now lol, but there's zero chance that it would've ended up as some "Sanctuary of the Middle East".
