So, Im told the flu and the common cold are unrelated. But I got colds like clockwork once or twice a year my entire life until I got my first flu shot in 2018 I havent had a cold in the three years since.

So is that just coincidence or?

The flu is from an influenza virus.
The common cold is from a rhino virus.
Completely unrelated.

to decrease chances of getting the flu and/or cold:

wear a mask
lavate las manos (wash your hands).
consider a flu shot (if want, this one is optional).
avoid the sick.

The most common cause of the common cold is rhinoviruses, but there are also adenoviruses and coronaviruses (obviously not the same one as causes covid) that can cause it too.

However, yes, there's zero overlap with influenza viruses.
