You admit(in the topic title) that the rock is racist. Perhaps with a little thought, you can begin to realize how the mere presence of such an artifact would be disrespectful to every black person on campus, student, and employee alike. Now, how would it's removal not be helpful to everyone of them?

I think they wanted to remove the rock and its racist history was just an excuse.

Think of if they'd simply removed the rock. We'd have people complaining about its historic significance and how the school are evil bastards for moving it. But they find an article in a newspaper where someone gave it a racist nickname and they suddenly have all the ammo they need to remove it without backlash -- and maybe with a little bit of positive PR.

Nobody is going to spend $50 dollars to remove a rock because a newspaper editor made a racist joke. Let's be real.

I'm black and it doesn't seem worth the effort honestly. Unless there's context missing there didn't really seem to be anything significant about the rock itself.

I haven't seen anything that says that the cash was donated for the purpose so it seems like the "it was paid for through private donations" is just that they dipped into some alumni funded pot of cash for charity and used it on..... this. Does anyone actually disagree that this is ridiculously stupid?

There was a time when people used the N-word to describe objects including rocks. The rock hasn't been called that in generations. Someone was digging through history and found out this slang used to exist and decides to remove some random rock on campus when there is no living memory of the rock being called anything offensive. Confederate statue this is not. Its a big rock.
