I'm going to sound very ignorant so please forgive me if I'm incorrect here.

Black people have very different hair than white people. It is expensive and difficult to maintain real black hair once it gets to a certain length. I think wigs and weave are a cheaper and easier way to have more stylish hair for black women.

My first girlfriend back in high-school was black and she kept her hair a little past shoulder length. She needed to use a lot of expensive treatments and get a $75 hair appointment every 3-4 weeks to maintain her hair, and she was in a single parent (her dad had passed) fairly low income home.

natural black people hair isn't always appreciated or accepted in some places, so it's an alternative to having to use (often) damaging processes to straighten hair.

and there's a long history of that.

also, it provides variety, and it's something white women (and women of all races) often do as well, but it sometimes stands out more with black women because it generally differs the most from black hair.
