Don't have

I noticed this, most games got great everything but Textures have not improved.

Super high quality Texturing needs to happen already

I know right! Halo 3 actually had some badass textures for its time but since then devs stopped caring

Did the RAGE carmack "super textures" fiasco scare devs?

Textures take up a crazy amount of space don't they

I remember Carmack back then hyping RAGE texturing and saying it didn't take much

Rendering a room full of quality 4K textures would probably make modern consoles combust.

LOL

It is funny that RAGE 2 dropped all that stuff, it just became Colorful open world DOOM 2016

There have been very few games made on modern hardware and last gen consoles had memory shared between system and graphics, and it wasn't a high amount of memory

High res textures take up a lot of memory

Memory is the key ya, the next consoles need to have more of that

Tbh I think it's more important for devs to be smart about what in their games looks great for sake of performance and art. Making everything in the world 4K and amazing is just impossible.

People complain about dumb shit like glass not shattering correctly when you shoot out a car window or books on a shelf not looking realistic, but those things don't effect my experience whatsoever with a game.

If you YouTube "Unreal Engine Archviz" or whatever you can see these tools can make extremely photorealistic environments and textures and it is actually possible to create them. But it isn't possible for current hardware to handle it in terms of gaming.

Even pcs? What about like super computers?

I mean, probably. But devs have to determine whether or not that's a big enough market to dedicate their resources too. And it definitely isn't. There are archviz vids that run above 60fps but they're just cameras exploring a 3D space with no interaction.

I'm no expert tho I'm just some dumbass speaking out of my ass that watched a lot of UE and 3D animation videos lmao

So it seems there really is a barrier in that sort of tech. Processing power is the problem? Hmmm. True quantum computers can't get here fast enough.

Yeah well there is truth to the whole "consoles hold gaming back" shit PC players say but at the same time gaming most likely wouldn't be nearly as popular or lucrative if the average consumer had to spend $2.5k+ on hardware that can run the things we're imagining. It's definitely a symbiotic relationship. Eventually the technology will become cheap enough to get a glimpse of it in our lifetime.

If you have a decent computer you can download Blender and a few 4K or 8K textures, make a simple shape like a brick wall and see how realistic you can make things look pretty easily. Entirely different than putting that into a working game but its pretty fun to mess with.
