I have an ASUS that I got for a little less than that couple years ago. It's served me well. It's part of their ROG series.

It has a weird keyboard layout though. I wouldn't use it for anything other than gaming.

I should go.

I was one of them.

Since a few years ago, the debate is stupid. There are great gaming laptops nowadays.

And with online gaming being so prominent, meaning that extremely optimized games are popular, the portability is extremely handy.

the acers have gotten better and they're generally pretty affordable.

Otherwise i'll support the MSI suggestions too, I still have an 8 years old machine that runs just fine and it's really easy to do simple upgrades to 'em (ssd, ram)

Hmm, well do you think you'd really get good use out of it being a mobile computer vs a desktop?

Buying a gaming laptop is just setting yourself up for disappointment. You're always going to pay more than you would an equivalent desktop, which is why PC gamers do this. I also understand people need portability, so often a gaming laptop is the only choice.

EDIT: BUT! With the rise of SFF (small form factor) desktop cases, the portability factor becomes less of an advantage for laptops.

Why a gaming laptop?
It will only last a year because of high temperatures. But a desktop will last for at least 5.
Mine is still going 8 years later.

I've enjoyed my Acer Predator 300 I got 2 years ago.

They seemed to design it well, can play some beefier games for hours without any thermal throttling on the game.

yeah I'm not too surprised by that kind of results, that said it still performs decently for the price. It wouldn't be my first choice but if it's several hundred dollars cheaper than an equivalent laptop from another brand, it's not necessarily a bad purchase.

If you happen to live inside a fucking volcano, then sure. I have a MSI I got around 5 years ago. Never even replaced the thermal paste. Still running League, WoW and Dead By Deadlight without hiccups.

And I live in a pretty hot city all year round.

Uh, these are not PC-intensive games. Like my phone could run WoW.

I just mentioned the online games I play on a daily basis. I've played several AAA games with no problems.

The whole "laptop will last a year" thing is bullshit. Materials have come a long way, and heat dissipation has improved drastically in the past few years. There are plenty of videos on it.

Oh and the guy that mentioned sff, you'd still need a display, and the setup would be clunky.

Personally, if I was going to get one now, I'd be looking for either a 2-in-1 or a handheld (very tough choice between the two...) with good integrated graphics, that also supports connecting an eGPU. The graphics thing being more critical for the handheld, as I'd actually use it on-the-go for gaming (whereas portable use of the 2-in-1 would be more browsing / light usage).

"Good integrated graphics" to me basically means 5th gen Ryzen 7 or 11th gen i7. Maybe I could settle for the Ryzen 5 / i5 if I was buying the eGPU right away at the same time as the laptop, but if integrated alone had to tide me over for a while I'd insist on the best I can get. (For comparison, I'm currently running a laptop with a 6th gen i7 / GTX 960M, and so far it's been able to keep up with everything I've tried to play in at least 1080p 30fps, though it showed signs of struggling a little bit on Oddworld Soulstorm.)
