First of all. I have always loved hardwood floors. They're really the way to go if you don't have kids or pets. I would recommend a polishing product like Pledge. They make one that smells like almonds, which is my favorite.

As for the carpet you have plenty of options for vacuums. I would personally buy one that's mid-spectrum. Since it's upstairs you won't be vacuuming all the time and it's easy to spend too much on one.

The thing about carpet is that it hides dust and bacteria in it. Over time, a carpet can start to get a funk. Sometimes it smells like your feet, sometimes old cooking or pets. Buy some stuff similar to Carpet Fresh. It's a baking-soda based product that pulls bacteria that causes bad smells out of the carpet itself The powder is then vacuumed up leaving you with fresh-smelling carpet.
