probably, but its annoyingly misleading for people that know the lore. the show will likely focus on sauron and his bullshit in numenor, could have easily done a shot of meneltarma with eagles circling it and a distant tol eressea in view.

The Second Age is characterized by the establishment and flourishing of Nmenor, the rise of Sauron in Middle-earth, the creation of the Rings of Power and the Ringwraiths, and the early wars of the Rings between Sauron and the Elves. It ended with Sauron's defeat by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

Now what this means to you is that no, it will not follow the movies but you might recognize a few names.

Thank you. So it's a prequel about the flashback from the movies. I'm in!

essentially this is probably going to be a sauron origin story. should do a good job explaining the importance of all the rings, or the origin of aragorn's family line, or what really led up to saurons first war.

the two trees in the distance. they are Laurelin and Telperion. essentially they were the sun and the moon before the sun and the moon were even a thing, and they were destroyed in the first age.

the "sun" in the background, zoom in and you'll see two different trees below the light. one is dark, likely Telperion, the other appears lit with a golden light and is likely Laurelin. like i said, they were essentially the sun and the moon, and they were only both 'lit' at the same time two times a 'day', essentially at what you'd call dawn and dusk.

Some quick questions I had.

So what building is that? I thought it was Minas Tirith.

What age does the final battle with Sauron happen and how many years before that battle would this show be?

If we're talking about the creation of the Rings, does this mean that Celebrimbor will be involved?

Where is Gandalf at right now?

  1. likely valmar, which was the city of the valar (the gods) and the vanyar (the light elves who you never see outside valinor).
  2. second age, literally the end of the second age, which is a little over 3000 years before the lotr books. for reference, this picture is from the 'years of the trees' which actually sits before the first age that started with the rising of the sun and the awakening of man, which would be tens of thousands of years before even the first age began.
  3. yes probably. if it talks about the creation of the rings he'll have to play a role.
  4. valinor. the istar didn't come to middle earth until the third age.

^also about Gandalf, iirc it was said in The Silmarillion that in his youth in Valinor, he was known as Olorin. i wonder if they are going to refer to him as such, and make it clear somehow that he's Gandalf, or if they are just gonna call him Gandalf or what.
Even the Jackson films mostly ignored acknowledging characters who went by multiple names (including Gandalf), so I kind of doubt they would account for that.

Very revealing how some of you just underestimate the angry nature of chimpanzees. I don't know how some of you can sleep at night. Chimps are strong enough to rip off your arms. I just can't fathom their fearsome strength. Originally i was going to talk about pits here but chimpanzees are worse. Us democrats need to introduce legislation that bans chimpanzees as pets. Sorry but i just feel strongly about this. I can't sleep at night thinking about how a chimp can come through my window at any time because some dumbfuck conservative owns one as a pet and doesn't take care of it. So please think about legislation. Absolutely terrible how these animals can just roam freely in America. To be honest imagine how badly a pack of them would be. Really close to unstoppable to be honest. Ordinarily I wouldn't go on like this but it's so scary. Literally capable of ripping you in two. Literally.

if any of this takes place on numenor i'm sure there will be a shot of tol eressea seen on the horizon from meneltarma.

it seems very unlikely he'd even show up in the show unless they decide to make shit up like they did in shadow of mordor/war.

I'm reading The Silmarillion right now and it's amazing. I put it off for so long because people said it reads like a text book. That doesn't do it justice. If you're interested in the world, this is a must read.

I'll plan to also read the Unfinished Tales before the show comes out.

This is one thing I am a bit concerned about. The show is definitely trying to be the next Game of Thrones, but the adult stuff in GOT will feel really out of place in LOTR...

Also, we saw how shitty the story can become when there isn't enough original source material (Hobbit Trilogy, end of Game of Thrones), it does not bode well that all they have is a few parts of the Silmarillion to go off of.

the tolkien estate is very controlling about how the works are used and retold, they lost their shit over the jackson movies but couldn't do anything because warner bros had bought the rights to produce movies for those books back in the 70s. apparently the estate is being much more heavy handed with enforcing their vision of the series with amazon.
