The game plays so well, but the issue is the pacing. Dear god, the pacing. The amount of times you shoot one guy then you are stuck in an unskippable cut scene, then you shoot a few more, then cutscene. Cutscene cutscene cutscene. It is the worst excesses of cinematic in the industry.

I absolutely adore the first two games and so naturally I bought the third game in anticipation.

I vividly recall not liking the game at all because it didn't feel inspired by the first two games. And so naturally, I brought it back to GameStop.

However, in recent years I've been much more open-minded to new games, new genres and ultimately, going back and playing older games that I either missed or didn't give a shot.

Max Payne 3 I think might be one of those games. I think I might want to try it again. But I do recall not liking it so much that I returned it to the store.

It definitely is a lot different in tone and presentation from the first two. Some people even say it's not a real Max Payne game. But as a third-person shooter it's fantastic, one of the best released that gen.

The first two are really good, especially MP2. That game is great. But MP3 was just fucking outstanding. I hooked up my PS3 to play it again not too long ago. I loved almost everything about it -- the presentation, the change of setting and the tone, the amazing soundtrack, the more fluid controls, Max's growth as a character, the fact that they got rid of the unnecessary platforming sections (which already makes it better than the first two for me).
My only real gripes with the game are the (mostly) unskippable cutscenes and the fact that they got rid of the Bullet Time Reload move from MP2. But other than that, it's easily the best of the three imo. I wonder if R* will ever bother making a new one, or at the very least, porting MP3 to current and last gen consoles.

as someone who really liked Max Paynes 2 and 3, I really disliked the first game.

I've probably beaten the second and third games more than 10 times each, but I only played through the first one once.

I remember Sam Lake saying something about taking a script writing class after the first Max Payne, because his improvement as a writer really showed.

It's super noticable when you go to replay in one the settings that make unskippable cutscenes the dumbest fuckin choice possible.

When something comes back for the first time in nearly a decade, you kinda want it to hit all the right notes of what made it so popular to begin with. Max Payne 3 was essentially the series reemerging from dormancy, and yet it felt nothing like its predecessors. That's not how you're supposed to handle a series that has an established identity, and hasn't seen the light of day in years.

The biggest changes are the setting -- which I'm totally fine with after two games telling a New York noir story, not to mention that they touch on it a bit in 3 and it serves as a nice transition to the game's new direction in terms of tone and setting, which I feel they pulled off incredibly well -- the weapon inventory system, which I can see why some might have an issue with considering you can hold all your guns in the previous game, and the lack of platforming sections which I sa good riddance to.

Aside from those mostly small things, it's 100% a Max Payne game made with Rockstar's particular touch.

Also I am actually playing through it again after watching a summit1g speed run of MP3. Again the big issue is just the pacing, it really needs to let you just go and have fun shooting people. It stops and starts just TOO much. But when the game is going for it, and you are jumping down stadium steps in slow mo and head shotting 5 guys in a row, only to crumble into the wall at the end of it with a thud and a grunt, god damn does the game feel great. It might seem like it wants you to play as a cover shooter, but running and gunning is 100% the way to go.

Just, LET ME PLAY DAMMIT!

-lack of noir atmosphere
-lack of graphic novel-style storytelling
-lack of Max's poetic narration (it's there, but far less eloquent)
-lack of at least one surreal dream sequence

^Those are some pretty big elements the Max Payne series is known for. Their omission stands out like a sore thumb.

the reason is pretty simple and the type of obnoxious design that only rockstar is capable of.

i discovered a mod that finally lets you skip the godawful amount of cutscenes and i think i finished the game in about 4~ hours on hard with a fair amount of deaths.
