Reinstitute state run institutions.

It's necessary, but it's a talking point nobody wants to make.

downtown hasn't ever been the same ever since the BLM protests and the burning/looting of buildings.

It's OK when they do it.

Google says Portland has 12 homeless shelters and are planning on building at least 6 more by the end of the year.

Are all the shelters full, or is this a case of homeless people not wanting to stay in shelters? It's the former, displacing their camps seems misguided. If it's the latter, it seems completely justified.
There are various reasons a lot of people don't stay in shelters. Some of them are incredibly degrading and restrictive.

I live in Denver where the homeless numbers are not as high as in Portland but has increased since Covid.

Police have been doing weekly sweeps and many homeless refuse to stay in the shelters because not all of them are safe.

It's really hard for people who are forced to live on the streets right now.

It's the primary cause of the homelessness epidemic.

We need state run facilities to care for people who cannot care for themselves, especially when they don't have the wherewithal to to know that they cannot care for themselves.

It's sad that institutions became such a big political issue that it's hard to talk to people who would otherwise on the other side of the issue.

that's what rehab places and nursing homes are for. I've worked in some where almost ALL the residents were homeless people. I left work and saw one of the guys just sitting on the side of the road like a half a mile away smoking a cig once.

the problem is actually getting these people medical attention before they die in the streets, because taking a homeless person and giving them a $10000 hospital bill doesn't do much good. and medicare/medicaid don't cover everything. and obviously we "can't afford" to give them free healthcare.
