Definitely don't just take it. If they'll agree to give you one, go for it.

You'll also need to figure out if they function as standalone APs or if they need a separate controller. If they do need a controller, they aren't old any use without it.

I wouldn't be surprised if those APs require the proprietary equipment sitting in the server room in order to run them.

As someone who works with access points, I can tell you that they will notice when it goes offline and they will notice when it goes online at a different location and IP address.

its already offline. it was stashed in a box in the server rack case box thing lmao. they definitely aren't using it.

but you can really see if it goes online remotely at a different location?

Some APs are managed via cloud applications that the device sends management data to. GPS location, WAN IP address, connected devices, etc. are all things that can be sent to the management platform.

i see. afaik, these are all managed locally. this is what i think we use
https://support.ruckuswireless.com/products/73-zonedirector-1200#sort=relevancy&f:@commonproducts=[ZD1200]

which, btw, i can't even log in to. they set up my account and it just says no everytime. even our network guy was confused. he created the account for me!

These days in 2021 I would be shocked if they couldn't.

They don't need a controller. I have two in my house and they work great. They come with their own PoE switch/cable. I have one wired into my router and my second one meshed(wirelessly connected) to the first one.

You can get a ubiquity router controller thing for them but that's for more advanced monitoring and features. If you just want something to power on and provide internet then they'll work.
