Because Trump, in his vanity and entitled ignorance, downplayed the virus. That allowed many right-wingers to latch onto the notion that this was some liberal hoax.

Honestly, I think because it initially hit "blue" states first and the hardest, so it was easy for the "red side" to claim everyone was overreacting to it.
It's kinda like how most of the country knows how bad the California wild fires are every year, but unless you're right there, it's kinda "out of sight, out of mind". And once the Government (both local and national) was making the rules on what people could and couldn't do, and where they could and couldn't go, it then riled up another pocket of the country. --- It takes zero effort to be a good person. ...
