Divinity Original Sin 2, I mean. Controversial topic. I played definitive edition.

The game was extremely well made and I have no criticisms on that level, but just fundamentally it was fucking crazy difficult. Add to that the ridiculousness of "choice". I put that in quotes because is it really a choice between option 1 where you get no rewards and option 2 where you get all the rewards? Or commonly, dialogue options 1 to 3 result in fucking up the entire questline and the only right answer is dialogue option 4 that gives you 3x the Exp? Oh but you can only choose dialogue option 4 if you have the right character. There is a secret dialogue option 5, but unless you look up the guide then you will literally never figure this out yourself.

This might have been fine if the game was flexible, but remember that crazy difficulty? You are starving for experience the entire game. Between the crazy hard difficulty and the illusion of choice, you're pidgeonholed into making perfect decisions in nearly every encounter.

This problem goes right to the final battle and really summed up my experience of the game. You can either:

  1. Do the heroic thing and refuse to work with the bad guys, and proceed to get absolutely obliterated by the most obscene collection of bosses all grouped together against you (who all get a turn first)
  2. Do the shitty thing and then allow some of those bad guys to work with you to make it even remotely possible to win
And then the next series of invisible choices:
  1. Try to fight the battle properly and absolutely die
  2. Figure out the precise character you need to kill and how to kill him in order to make winning possible

Basically, i felt like I was cheesing my way through the majority of the game, having to look up the one strategy that wins in each case. It's all well and good to say "git gud", but if gitting gud just means you need to know the exact safe combination to unlock it then I dunno, that's not really a game. And the battles are exactly quick. You'll be 30 minutes into a fight before you realise you've made a critical error at the start.

I thought this game was supposed to be about choice?

sigh. I enjoyed parts. But by the end I was just frustrated and hell and waiting for it to end.

i didn't like it either. people rave about it, but there really is only one "correct" way to handle certain enemy loadouts, and that bugged me. not to mention the amount of talking and quests that involved anything but fighting bored me so much that i actually dozed off while my co-op partner did it

I think Act 2 was way too long. By the time I got to Act 3, I was getting tired, and by Act 4 I was running on fumes.

it's one of my favorite games, but I can understand criticisms towards it.

one thing that I really hate about the dialogue is how even though you might have a character leveled up in persuasion, the game often arbitrarily chooses another character to speak with NPCs and enemies.

also, I think in act 4, there's a high difficulty increase which makes things more frustrating.

Yeah that persuasion thing REALLY annoyed me. And I thought by the end of act 3 that I had my shit together but then all of a sudden in the final act shit got real again.
