It's based on poetry, so my assumption is that they have weird names to help with rhythm.

I looked up the poems and the very first one is the explanation. It's called The Naming of Cats and it's about how cats have three names. The first is the one the family uses, but the second one is unique to each and every cat.

But I tell you, a cat needs a name thats particular,
A name thats peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
