Why is Japan alright with a sex offender being at the Olympics.

Technically, he is not that, if I read it correctly.

Ive never thought about how the Olympics handles allegations prior to attendance, and here we are now.

Hes a replacement, and won first place in some tournament to get that. I guess if someone gets hurt or cant go, then he goes.

Youre correct. And seem to be one of 3 of us that did read it.

Because he's been suspended and kicked off his college fencing team for the same behavior.

Idk - being suspended from his college and kicked off the fencing team for sexual assault (in the article) paints a pretty clear picture of him being a sexual offender, especially when he violated the terms of his suspension.

Was he convicted?

He was suspended from his college (Columbia) for a year, expelled from the fencing team, and was not to have further contact with the fencers. If I'm reading the article correctly he violated the last part by going to different universities where the players would be at fencing gatherings/ parties.

It's insane that he's still allowed to compete.

We don't need gold badly enough to allow rapists to compete. And, as others have stated, they'll strip him of any medals he wins anyway.

documents obtained by BuzzFeed News, show a pattern of alleged sexual misconduct and violent behavior going back to 2010 when he was a first-year student at Columbia University.

You referring to that? So Ill just ask this one thing

Y'know given how many false convictions there are in our justice system, I find it odd that certain people on this board think "was he convicted" is enough for them, and in fact the ONLY metric.

uhh i think it's mostly the fact that he's been under investigation for the same thing before and kicked off his college team for it, and also the fact that historically speaking, ivy league college athletics tend to have a "boy's club" sort of culture where behavior like this is usually downplayed or shrugged off, and people like him tend to not be forced to face any real consequences for their actions.
Oh absolutely. I'm right with you there.

I just found some people in this topic who will decide that such things aren't worth believing, and that very specifically a conviction is required before deducing he's a bad actor who shouldn't be considered a good representative of his nation in a global games.

Like a conviction is some kind of magical switch that makes him guilty by fact.

For real
Ehh, its not really the same and I think about weed being legalized every day and think its a joke people get in trouble for it. But someone having accusations against them isnt really the same as someone having proof of them breaking a rule/law.

This whole thing though is very common in sports and happens yearly. Someone does something bad, the school or team says were deeply saddened by the events that happened and will start our research on finding out what happened and in the meantime the player will not be allowed to practice/play in games/be in the facility/etc. until we have confidently found out the truth.

Him being suspended and what not in no way shows hes guilty. And if it does, well then theres a shit ton of athletes across all sports that need to be banned from their leagues.

I guess Japan could have denied him entry into the country, but it doesn't appear he has been convicted yet. A sexual assault is usually grounds to deny entry though.

Still, probably would have been best if the U.S. just kept him off the team.

Not sure how anything good comes out of bringing him to Tokyo.

Errr... why wouldn't him being suspended AND removed from the fencing team show guilt/proof of the bad behavior in question?
And yes there's likely lots of athletes and other staff that have deserve consequences for their actions- that's the whole reason the SafeSport commission was created (even if it's not actually doing much).

You keep asking is he was convicted- by whom?
