I started my campaign years ago but I started in this country that has been suffering a plague and there are vaccinations in place and there's those denying the vaccinations and saying its turning them undead(not true but the plague IS doing the undead part) and there's a lot of conspiracy in the monarchy's government along with this organization named the Black Guard who is trying to dethrone the Queen and call themselves the true Patriots. I wrote this plot up a few years ago and I ended up keeping it because I hated to lose out on the writing but one of my players started having an anxiety attack at one point because it began to feel too much like real life...She finally calmed down after a week break and accepted that while its real, the fact that the players can involve themselves and turn things around, feels a lot more like therapy than anything.

I had a similar issue with a DND group at the beginning of the pandemic. I incorporated real life events into my game and it also became too real for the players so they ended up bowing out after a few sessions.

My story was kind of like yours with the virus and the undead only in my game Necromages were creating the virus and plaguing a region, but they were being used by Drow agents from the Underdark, which were supplying the necromages with the agent needed to create their sickness spreading miasma through various plans around the nation

Im saying this with all due respect

What the fuck kind of players are you inviting into your games and, more importantly, into your life?

wow, that's pretty cool. Thing is, this was not on purpose. Like I said, this is a long game and I wrote the storyline a long time ago. Just recently did my players end up in Cormyr though so I didn't get to use it and I started to realize the colorations.

She can be sensitive sometimes but she's my best friend and I guess my patience with some of the dramatic times is doing a lot of heavy lifting with our friendship. Recenlty, because she accidentally killed someone, she thought I was trying to make her quit.

It turned out that the person she killed was an agent of the crown and undercover. Then one of the players said "Are you TRYING to make her quit?" and I said "No, why would I do that?" and she thought I was being sarcastic. And its not that she calmed down through the week, she finally came to grips with it because she was suffering a lot of the COVID stuff and the game is about trying to escape, not about hurling fast right into it.

My last campaign had a DM who tried to put the girl in sexually humiliating situations. Apparently, that's a somewhat common thing that happens.

Thats really creepy weird.

Like as a player I've put myself in those positions and as a DM I've put people and had people put themselves in those situations but I've never targeted someone for those situations because they were a woman.

I'll never do that at all. That's pretty messed up.

I wouldn't say humiliating but I've allowed sexual things go on and played them out as the DM. If a player wants to hook up, I'll play a hooker, whatever but I don't think I'd purposely try to do that.

After all, the point of the game, especially to me, isn't to fulfill some weird fantasy..just to let them become heroes. ALTHOUGH, my favorite character I've made is the NPC of the guild they're in and they all love him and seriously I started blushing when they were talking about how great of a person he was.(they couldn't see though, this was online)

so..it sorta did fulfill some weird fantasy where a character that I made, personality I built, is highly enjoyed so well and even became a big part of THEIR Forgotten Realms.

Same. But there is a huge portion of "nice guy" types in the pnp rpr world who get off on basically harassing women for taking part in their hobby.

>_> That's why

  1. I play with friends.
  2. I play with newbies of the genre.

I think only 2 of my players are experienced but both don't fit the bill. I love my group. I always watch videos of terrible players and my group doesn't fall under that except for one:

>_> it feels like every session takes ten minutes for everyone to just....start doing something. I could use at least ONE spotlight hog lmao

Yea I didn't mean humiliating when describing my experiences, just have been involved in sexual situations in regards to playing and DMing.

Yea and they can suck a bag of dicks. Its really unfortunate that these people exist because they don't just exist in this hobby but all traditionally male hobbies and while it is slowly getting better it still sucks for people to have to put up with it.

Having to flirt with one of my best friends is probably the weirdest experience I ever had been in...especially trying to play a beautiful escort.

I think I've been pretty lucky to have great dm's in all my campaigns. Players range from awesome to ok.

Me and my roommate got tired of playing online and waiting for this pandemic to be over so we each created two pathfinder characters and are playing a DM-less hexcrawl using a bunch of random tables we cooked up
Nice.

Last game I was a player of, there were 8 of us and 1 of them was so loud and took all the attention. I really disliked the game because I felt ignored half the time and I came up with a great detective-like story and I thought our GM would be like me and use backstories and character types. But instead, I was relegated to just...battles.

The player who stole all the spotlight spent most of it trying to undermine the GM and constantly trying to break the game for his amusement. It was like he was playing a character who knew he wasn't real and he kept doing meta stuff like...we found a device and he immediately knew what it was because he read about it and he had all this knowledge so he knew what every weakness was and he was yelling at us(that's how he talked) and was telling us how to defeat the enemy outside the game.

And to top it off, he was a min-maxer. After about four games, I quit.

Yea players like that suck. I had joined a game online with someone that was trying to learn to be a better DM, so I suspected the story might not be all that great and was expecting things to move a little slow but I didn't really care because we all have to start somewhere. So another guy joins the game as well and just turns out to be a similar kind of player and just absolutely destroys the game because he felt the need to just be an ass about the whole thing. Like everyone that joined the game knew it was an inexperienced DM and the guy is treating him like he should have 20 years experience. He took advantage of every loophole he could find and made the DM just give up.

Yeah, I'm sorta inexperienced even with a few years under my belt but you can't just learn everything all at once. I was worried but the 2 experienced players seemed to like my game because even if I don't know all the rules, I at least put up a good story and have a narrative. I could never GM a 3.5 game though. I'm a storyteller, Jim, not a rocket scientist.

Yeah, I used to play a ton of competitive Magic and that community was filled with them. Just a shitload casual misogyny and outright hostility in some cases.
