Agreed, it has aged in more than a few areas, but it was fundamentally a seismic shift in game design alongside Mario 64.

Anyone that thinks that OoT is the best 3D Zelda right now has either not played many other 3D Zelda games or hasnt replayed OoT in a long while.

The only thing that's dated at all is the aiming mechanic for the bow/hookshot/longshot/slingshot/boomerang. And even those are pretty solid if you're used to them.

Maybe, but I still love it. Even been thinking of playing it again. I've been on an older game kick lately.

Not saying everyone who calls it overrated is this way, but lots of people seem to just like picking on older beloved games and insult them and call them overrated. They don't factor in the time period they came out in as well.

I don't believe that Ocarina of Time is overrated and I do think it deserves all the praise it gets for being legendary and innovative in design, but some people need to stop holding it as a gold standard when it's obvious their judgment is based solely on nostalgia.

not when it came out
Overall, I thought it was kinda bad back then too. The whole fairy & elf thing (Peter Pan chibi?), the weird triangle noses, throwaway bosses, the tri-force creation myth, etc. The Heart Pieces came off as really cheap. Mostly it was how other folks were salivating over this stuff tho. Thats Zelda for you. Exploring the game on my own, theres tons of stuff I like about it. Ganondorf & Sheik are pretty great. The Day & Night system was great how they implement it with Hyrule Castle & Field & how the NPCs & enemies are effected by it, and it looks gorgeous. All in all, taking technical feats into consideration, the game is somewhere in the 7-out-of-10 range for me personally.

As far as technical feats and popularity goes, its easily a 9-out-of-10

It loses a single point objectively for being rather immature

for children tho (not an objective audience for a dark fantasy setting with serious swords & mortifying zombies) ~ well..... the game is still a 9-out-of-10 because even kids who were into brutal material like that should know better (Star Wars, for example, and why we all loved Empire Strikes Back but knew Attack of the Clones was subpar in many important areas even as a younger audience)

but yea you see how the fanbase recoiled at Windwaker (total cartoon) & really how widely successful Twilight Princess was (full dark) ~ and BotW is arguably arguably more TP than WW, as is 99% of the Zelda material to follow OoT. Even Majoras Mask went for darker tones, but the audience generally found it too difficult to play.

and here we are

Yep, I missed out on the N64 era and missed out on the rose-tinted glasses of mind blowing 3D for the first time. It was already dated by the time I played master quest on Gamecube. (Not saying it's bad, it just isn't THE BEST EVER)

I think it has some of the weakest exploration in the series, which is my favorite aspect in the games.

Otherwise, it's still fun, and any dated design doesn't hurt it today.

OoT is one game that I say deserves every ounce of the praise it gets. At its time it was an absolute landmark game. The rare kind of game that changed the way people thought about video games from both a player and developer perspective. There was nothing else like it at the time and nothing else like it before.

And even today, while obviously dated, it still holds up incredibly well. It isn't my favorite Zelda game, but it is clearly the most important game of the franchise and one of the most important games of all time.

It's the least linear 3D Zelda outside of BotW (built entirely around that concept) by a very wide margin. By what metrics do you find the exploration better in others?

There's not really anything to find and do in the overworld, and is really barren and boring. It's nonlinear in terms of dungeon order, but for just running around and finding things in Hyrule Field, there's not much there.

It's not just dungeon order, it's all the quests that lead up to the dungeons too. When you become an adult, you're supposed to go to Kakariko. But you can instead go to Kokiri Forest, Death Mountain, Zora's Domain, or even Gerudo Valley if you do the sidequest to get Epona. But more importantly that just getting there, you can actually do something for the story. You can find out what's changed in 7 years and what issues everyone is facing, then get started on the quests for the dungeon there. You can learn the Minuet of the Forest, complete the mini dungeon Ice Cavern, get your Goron's tunic. Once you get the hookshot you can start any of those three dungeons right away. Doing the Forest Temple lets you go to the Bottom of the Well even though you don't need to go for another two dungeons. Beating the Water Temple lets you do the Spirit Temple even if you skipped Fire.

Majora's Mask has nothing like that. You do the main quests in one specific order. The only variance is getting the Song of Storms early. Wind Waker lets you learn the Wind God's Aria early, but not do anything with it. The Triforce Quest is open ended, which is kinda nice. Twilight Princess is even more linear than Majora's Mask. Skyward Sword is slightly less linear than Majora's mask because the quests in the third act can be done in any order.

Hyrule field being boring doesn't mean the rest of the game doesn't have exploration.

Nope. Still my favorite LoZ game. First game I ever played as a kid from beginning to end. I actually took the time to read the dialogue, and not give up to play another game when things got tough. No idea what it was about this game that did it, but video games started to make "sense" to me as a kid from then on. Because of this OoT will always hold a special place in my heart.

Replayed it last year. Still excellent. Combat feels really good with the lock-on system. Puzzles are great. Not that a good puzzle ever becomes dated anyway. Mostly its the care put into the world, the music, sound effects, and art design that makes it a timeless classic.
