Recently moved to LA district and have difficulty adjusting to the people here. I feel like people here openly ask "so what do you do?" in the first 2 minutes of a conversation and judge your worth based on your occupation.

So I started to lie here and there because I'm...sort of insecure. Sometimes I'm a script writer, or a coding geek trying to build his start up. Other times I'm a professional GO player (pick a game westerners are unfamiliar with so they can't fact check you). Everybody then starts to want a piece of you. If I'm being honest and tell them I'm some waiter at a restaurant? People won't bother holding a conversation.

You sound like you have a terrible personality to be honest. If people are getting that bored of talking to you, that fast, then something else is wrong.

Maybe it's your personality, how you act, dress, or this is just a troll topic.

Well they are just trying to survive by associating themselves with likely more successful people

It make me sad thinking about it

I've lived in SoCal all my life. That's probably like some sort of LA/big city attitude to have. Average people around here (outside of super rich or wannabe rich areas) aren't super vapid or judgmental or anything like that.

Well I do live right by FIDM in downtown LA. I guess people here are always looking to "network" and I can't help but feel like it's one big popularity contest.

I mean people that are local to SoCal. I want to give off an aura to people that tells them I'm distinctly from LA.

Yeah outside of places like this SoCal is full of normal people.

San Diego is pretty chill as well despite being a bigger city.

It makes me scared and confused that not everyone refers to their freeways as "the #"

Like the 5 or the 405. Interstate?? What??

It's a pretty inappropriate question to ask people that question. What if the other person's embarrassed of telling you their job, just so that they can get 20 seconds of your validation? Sometimes people work jobs they're not exactly fond of, and aren't keen to answering probing questions like that.

I lived there for about 4 years and SoCal has a very high concentration of superficial, smug, and fake individuals. Probably more so than anywhere else in the country.

Theres way more normal people though, theyre just more reserved so they dont stick out as much as the fake shit heads.

This.

Don't judge L.A. by the Westside or downtown/Arts district. Many (most?) there are transplants LARPING as locals.

I can barely afford to pay for my living expenses and I paying on cheaper end $1600 a month for rent. Santa Monica or Venice has a higher cost of living for me. Finding affordable rent in SoCal is super difficult, especially with the constant application fees and waiting period.

So how do I cope with them? Any skills you picked along the way, you'd like to share? or do I have to be equally smug and superficial to get along?

I mean...to be frank, all I really want is a cute anime loving girl who wouldn't mind spending the weekends watching re-runs of Dragon Ball Z with me. I'm not exactly sure why I made the commitment to move but where can I find those of type of girls in LA?

Not too many stay at home watch TV types - male or female - here. Hang out at an anime shop/convention or whatever and meet someone there.

One more thing Kimosabe. California moves at 45 RPM. NYC is about 2-3 weeks behind. The rest of the country is about 9-10 months.

I'm an L.A native but have lived in NYC, London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo and Vientiane. Interesting places but not that close.

If you really want to live in L.A. coming as an outsider, you change your address then your mind. How can you innovate, develop, research or develop your thing even more or better? This is the R&D state. Has been since day 1 if you think about it.

If you're a native it's muscle memory. If you came recently, it may be a challenge.

Californians are better about certain things, like race, but are actually incredibly classist. They also think they are better than everyone else, and they kind of are.

NorCal has much nicer people who dont judge as quickly, especially with regards to clothes and how you look (especially silicon valley), but make no mistake, California has the most competitive people on the planet.

so if I'm a bit of a recluse and I'm socially awkward, what are some things you recommend me to do inorder to feel less of a struggle? I really want to soak in the L.A. life style, so that I can come across as a native to newcomers.

Find a venue that reflects your interests. ANY OF THEM. Sounds like you like anime. OK, find out those kind of events and attend them as you can.

Mingle, talk, don't be afraid to even embarrass yourself. But don't let anyone try to embarrass you and don't be an asshole. This is a big fucking city. You could fit San Francisco, Boston, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Clevelandplus the island of Manhattan, within Los Angeles city limits.

L.A. County is as big as some states.

There is shit happening here like nowhere else in the world.

Don't try to hit a homerun on the first pitch though slugger. That's how newbies crash to my GenX observation.

Start small, build on it. Take care of your mental and physical health too - it's easy to get here for free.

Good luck.

Give yourself a reasonable chance and believe in yourself.
