I'm a regular poster on another board, and in there is this certified shitposter that makes more alts than meals per day, spends unhealthy amounts of time trying to "rig" the system, you know the type.

So one day I called him out on something dumb he said, and he blocked me.

Fine. Less interactions with a poster I don't feel adds too much to the conversation anyways, theoretically we both win in this scenario, right?

Thing is, he's so active that in my pov topics get bumped for no reason, and whenever he's successful derailing things I get no context either, so my experience gets disrupted anyways when the purpose of the block system is the opposite.

I don't know, I understand the need for a block system, but maybe sometimes it's abused by bad faith posters to further disrupt things. Maybe it could get some tweaking? Like, if a poster blocks me I can still see their posts, but they can't see mine? Then again, if they did that it would be the same as the ignore function.

What is YOUR experience with the block system?

Ideally, there should be a way for a topic to not be bumped for you when a blocked poster or someone who is blocking you posts in it, but I'm not even sure how that would work.

I have a total of one person blocked/ignored, and that was for directly engaging me with confrontation on numerous times within a short time period.

from what I can tell, they are continuing to demonstrate exactly why I did it in the first place

Other than that, sure ~ like anything, its going to get abused & misused

you act like [etc], eventually people will treat you like [etc]

Just go to that site to see the posts, then address him in some off site discord or subreddit and have your CEhomies post in those topics for you. Seems to work around here.

There are definitely abuse cases related to the blocking system. It makes sense to be able to ignore users, and even to restrict users from seeing your posts to a certain degree--where I think the line is crossed is in forbidding blocked users from seeing or even posting within a topic created by somebody who blocked them.

You can't, but here's the scenario I'm talking about:

Person A blocks person B
Person C makes Topic1
Person B posts in Topic1, Topic1 shows up in active messages list

Separate topics and new posts in separate topics get made, Topic1 falls down the list of topics on the board as newer topics and newer posts happen.

Person A posts in Topic1
Person B sees Topic1 show up at the top of the list
Person B clicks on Topic1, but can't see any new posts

Needs more harsh transparency instead of blissful ignorance.
"[user] is blocking you" and "you are ignoring [user]" instead of random posts just being missing.

I don't use the block feature and I can't say I've ever really felt like it was disrupting my experience very much... that said I do make pretty frequent use of the ignore feature and it has basically all the same issues <_<

Well, the issue of topics appearing to have new posts when actually they don't because you can't see them is definitely fixable somehow. Maybe not very easily depending on gfaqs's internals and probably not worth the effort, but possible

on the other hand, the issue of topics mysteriously becoming derailed can't ever really have a solution. well, actually it can (banning the troublemaker) but that's a totally different story

No, I get that. Forgive me for not elaborating, as I was actually trying to get your take on what TC is talking about. I was under the impression "my POV topics" were topics that the TC created. I was wondering how someone blocked could post in his topics that he made.

I think the biggest issue in terms of toxicity is the fact that people will often block the users who are most likely to report them for TOS violations. In a sense it makes them more capable of breaking rules without being modded.

I don't see how the blocking system is good at all. It's one thing to choose whether or not you see posts from other people--it's entirely a different thing to choose whether or not they can see entire conversations taking place on a public board.

The only thing worse than willful ignorance (ignore) is forceful ignorance (block).

The saddest thing is people who block and then talk shit.

Like, how pathetic are you that you cant possibly deal with the snap back after you talk some shit?

Even MORE pathetic than that is when they block and talk, they jump on an alt to keep seeing your posts to try and quote you without you knowing.

Its fucking weird.
