First of all, no one pro legalization is saying smoke weed 24/7 and that marijuana itself is harmless.

Real proponents of legalization advocate for responsible use, obviously.

But it's interesting to me that opponents (notably just conservatives) keep bring up psychosis as if America doesn't also have a rampant alcoholism problem or opioid crisis.

And if we were gonna talk about a cause of both psychosis and alcoholism, I'd be more inclined to blame the horrific dystopian economy we're quickly approaching before blaming any one substance.

I think people forget that substance abuse is a symptom of larger, more endemic societal issues.

Apparently the article originally comes from a conservative news outlet.

Makes sense.

It relies on ignorance too. If you've spent any time around heavy smokers vs heavy drinkers, it becomes obvious which one is more physically damaging. Not like burnouts are a shining example of responsible use.

But it's easy to factually prove that marijuana is less harmful than any other mind-altering substance on the market.

conservatives tend to start with the conclusion they want and then try to justify it. in this case, the conclusion was "weed needs to be illegal". then they just had to find every way they could manage to make it happen.

No, it's definitely not.

But I think the information is deliberately phrased to incite fear.

If you look up the definition for psychosis, it almost implies reefer madness levels.

> a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality.

Some Christian mom in the middle of Ohio is going to read this and be like, "weed makes you psychotic!" which is clearly not true. Well, I guess it depends how much you really ingest. There's crazy like 1000 mg THC brownies nowadays.

There's a real observed relationship between marijuana use being an antecedent/risk factor for psychosis.

This

I hate the right but the link between pot and psychosis is 100% real, has been known for decades and is not a political stance, it's a fact

I'm pro the legalisation of all drugs and even I agree the left does a massive disservice by intentionally downplaying risks because they are inconvenient

I do not recall finding good evidence for marijuana causing psychosis - the studies that exist that I saw showed a small association, not causation, and it was heavily dependent on things like genetic predisposition to psychosis (there's a gene called AK1 or something like that). And if you do it in adolescence or not.

Generally when accounting for age and predisposition to psychosis, it is an association but no clear causal relationship has been shown. Happy to be shown new information if anyone found any.

So youre saying smoking weed made you completely lose touch with reality? You go to the hospital for this? Mental ward? If the answers are no you didnt have psychosis.

The link between cannabis and psychosis is only for people with existing risk factors (i.e. genetic predisposition to mental illness) and tends to only be associated with long term use.

Meanwhile a single night of drinking alcohol can induce acute psychosis.

Cannabis use can cause acute psychosis, which is why a causal relationship with chronic psychotic disorders is more plausible.

Its literally defined as a condition that affects how your brain perceives information / sensory input.

If you eat a few magic mushrooms you're technically in a state of psychosis. It doesn't inherently require medical attention or psychiatric care.
