But yes, Cinemassecre jumped that shark quite a while ago. James only stays there for the paycheck.
AVGN was done with E.T., and has lingered on with only Polybius being notable since.

There were some other decent ones since then. Pepsiman, Sonic 06, Earthbound, Game Boy Accessories, Seaman, and Mega Man DOS were all pretty good. Haven't seen any new ones in a couple years though

But I agree for the most part. It was in sharp decline after his movie and I think the spirit of the channel completely died when Mike Matei left. Say what you will about the guy but it's true

I'm wondering how much money James even makes off it anymore though. The last couple AVGNs didn't even get 1 million views. And you know YouTube and the new obese guys in his posse are taking a big chunk of the ad money

The content has sucked since Bootsy left the channel.

I'll never actively hate on James because he was a pioneer and put out great content for years that I will keep rewatching. But it's just a really crappy channel at this point.

At this point it's probably best to watch his old video, I think he's at the point where he wants to throw the towel but can't yet because of reasons plus I dislike his new nerd outfit.

Last years season of AVGN seemed like it was going to be the last good season.

Clearly he should focus less on gimmicks and get back to giving trivia and detailed dives on the history of games and franchises, and then just actually do more playing on screen and swearing at it. It feels like he was working too hard to make it a "show" and not just a guy who knew a lot about video games telling you and then swearing at them.

He's done really good vids for like 10 yrs and then cashed out. Pretty much what happened.

He doesn't really own Cinemassacre now and leaves most of the operation to those Screenwave Media guys that literally nobody likes lol. Since then those Screenwave guys have just tried to copy Redlettermedia, and James has relegated himself to a mostly actor role.

They also got rid of all those really good thumbnail arts that Mike drew in favor of some generic title and AVGN face. I'll probably never forgive them for that. I can understand Mike didn't want to do those anymore but the old ones didn't need to go away

Sad state of affairs, but plenty of new people are taking over the scene. Scott the Woz is basically like a better AVGN atm

Gonna be honest: I think I lost interest in AVGN in college (six years ago). I've seen some of his videos since then, and they're not bad, but I remember thinking his early stuff was HILARIOUS. Was it actually hilarious, or was I an easily entertained teenager? Who knows.

I'm glad Scott's getting a lot of recognition now.

I actually think his content like a year or 2 after his movie were by far his best. When James was doing like Board James or stuff like the Seaman episode, he was on top of his game

But yeah Scott the Woz is seemingly hitting an even higher peak than AVGN ever did. He's also still with most of his group of friends, which is really difficult to do because a lot of arguments can happen behind the scenes. Says a lot about his ability as a leader and a content creator

Yeah, he's burnt out and just on autopilot and only doing AVGN because it pays the bills. All he does now is recite the script already written for him by the Screenwave guys. Apparently someone else is writing Monster Madness as well. What's even the point now?

Also, those SW guys keep trying to force themselves into videos in an attempt to glom onto James and hopefully have some popularity rub off on them like with Rental Reviews.

The original crew of friends is gone. Mike's gone. Bootsy's gone. Kyle's gone. At least you could see the friendship and comradery when they were on. Now it's these guys nobody has heard of nor cares about and James seems awkward around them like they barely know each other.

James needs to just do videos about what he's passionate about. He's the only guy I think that could make a video about a piece of cardboard in the background of a horror movie and make it interesting. I really liked his video about which Dracula movie was the most faithful adaptation too. Even that video of him watching The Song Remains The Same was more entertaining than AVGN. He should stick to stuff like that, but then again those videos don't being in the views and help pay the bills like AVGN.

Hes likely locked into a contract, most times people stop doing these things when the passion is gone, but if they are locked into a contract they have to keep at it until the contract is up.

Another thing, those drums sound like garbage, but to be fair, that's a problem in music production in general nowadays. Lots of modern drumming sounds fake and overproduced now. Then again, it seems like most guitar playing on youtube has that exact same awful tone as well.

Yeah, it's very clear that he stopped caring, especially after he dried up the well of games that he played as a kid. And with the old crew gone and these new Screenwave guys calling all the shots, he's just going through the motions.

Hell, even his set looks fake now; was that old set with all the video games on shelves his or Mike's? Now, he barely even walks through it; he's just sitting on the couch like 95% of the time.

No but seriously he hasn't been in charge of his channel for many years now but because Screenwave owns his channel he's contractually obligated to keep going on like a slave to his own creation. And he can't just quit either because then he loses the AVGN rights along with financial security to help support his family.

His life tho.

He seems to genuinely enjoy it, too. I think he's much more into video games than James maybe ever was.
