I encourage everyone to donate to reforestation efforts.
I encourage everyone to significantly cut their consumption of animal products, especially meat. They aren't just burning down the Amazon for the hell of it. They're doing it because of humanity's insatiable hunger for meat.

not just meat, also soy and palm oil products

Soy by itself isn't all that bad. They're a good source of calories, protein, fiber, and iron, so they are a good crop to grow. The problem is we grow so much of it, and animal agriculture is the primary driving force of that. 73% of a soybean is the meal, which is human-edible and the most nutritious part of the bean, but 97% of that meal is fed to pigs, chickens, and farmed fish. Another 6% of the bean is the hull which is almost exclusively fed to cows.

Yeah huge parts of our farming product is done to support the meat industry. Less meat eaten = less need for lots of cows/pigs = less need for entire fields dedicated to feeding cows/pigs.

They are only growing that much soy to feed to the cows.

Humans don't eat that much soy. This is 100% about meat.

The main problem with vertical farms is the energy consumption required for them is high. Until we switch to renewables they will mostly be limited to leafy vegetables. But they definitely need to play a part in reducing our land usage going forward.

I guess you could say we are working on that with cultured meat. It uses 99% less land. I hope they can continue to get the price down and scale it up. It's going to be a massive disruption to so many industries. I just wish the technology was being pushed more decades ago because we need it now.

At least here, it's a problem cause there's not enough young people to fund old people pensions. As a result, by the time I become a pensioner, the money I pay into the system will become worthless

They most certainly will. You had better start saving to fund your own retirement; if you get any social security in old age consider that gravy.

If anyone here has extra time, consider getting involved in some kind of engineering work that is aimed at solving this problem.

Even 100 more brains working on this stuff, could make a difference.

You can also plant a tree for as little as $1 through the National Forest Foundation, if you want to make a difference with some spare change or even with volunteering.

https://www.nationalforests.org/tree-planting-programs/climate

Through our 50 Million for Our Forests campaign, the NFF offers you a proven, immediate and effective solution to fight climate change. For every $2 you donate to the NFF, we will plant 2 trees, and you will help remove 1 Metric ton (Mt) of CO2e from the atmosphere over the life of those trees.

People want nice things. We have to find a way to keep producing nice things, be it in orbit or with modern technology enabling more sustainable production. No one will want to hear that we should all become poorer or submit to new overlords and their rules on consumption, because those are not the necessary or only solutions to the problem of CO2 emissions.

Yeah this. Go ahead everyone and say shit about how Brazil needs to be invaded and that this is all Bolsonaro's fault. Never mind that there's a huge international market that incentivizes burning the rain forest that will remain in place long after he dies from hiccups, or contracts covid for the 53rd time or whatever.
