The game has a greater sense of artistic cohesion than all other classic Mario games, and expertly captures the sense of a dream-like storybook world. Gameplay's a bit iffier though. The collectibles rob you of a sense of fulfillment if you don't complete a stage perfectly, and completely a stage perfectly sucks a lot of the fun out of it. The targeting reticule is a product of its time, and can be satisfying when you line up that perfect shot, but it's still a pain the majority of the time. And while I don't have the vitriol for Baby Mario's crying that most do, it's definitely not a positive, especially considering that taking a single hit from a boss will rob you of the all-important 'perfect' stage clear.
