Most people aren't psychotic murderers, so they'd just get high, or steal stuff rather than kill their neighbors.

Which is exactly why in Purge canon the government needed to send in death squads to get the numbers up. In the end it was just a way to kill off the poor.

There are too many crimes of passion, crimes of opportunity, and predatory psychopaths out there for people to confine their depraved behavior to one night a year.

I just see it creating a lot of revenge crime. You kill someone's family member/s or rape them or whatever and many people that are otherwise normal, productive members of society aren't going to wait an entire year to retaliate against those responsible, especially with no repercussions coming from law enforcement.
Eventually you'd have factions that joined together for protection during the night of the purge. The anger and hatred of those large groups of people aren't just going to come to a sudden end as soon as the night is over, they're going to start to think "we're big enough now, screw it, why listen to the government. We can control our area". It would spill over into the next day/days and probably become a war.

They aren't waiting until the purge. If you're going to shoot up a mall, you probably aren't going "Oh, I better wait until the government makes this legal..."

And you can hide in your house. Board up the house, lock the doors. Most people wouldn't be attacked. If you are, then yeah that sucks for you.

It's a very interesting franchise and concept but not very realistic. Also the most recent movie is about a danger that could pop up. That some people may get too hooked and never want the Purge to end

it would fail after a year once the government realized how much money was stolen from them.
