Obviously in regards to media, those types of things are a reflection of the time and culture in which they were created. It is not an excuse for someone's present behavior

From a psychological standpoint, it's interesting as a tool to delve into the minds of the people that were around pre-civil rights era. If you watch media with the understanding that it's a product of its time, you can appreciate how far we've come and how much further we have to go. You can definitely learn a lot more than you'd get from a fucking statue.
