Mars is terrible

The gravity alone is reason enough never to entertain sending people there for prolonged periods

Say you have the power source

then you need a navigation system, which they just dont have. So, what we need to do is start sending more probes. A network of probes will quickly relay deep space information, but.... not in our lifetime. Therein lies the problem for this generation. So, likely, these are dilemmas our children will have solved

what do you need navigation for. lagrange points aren't in deep space

How does a space colony generate wealth? Other than purely scientific or survival. Which are great reasons but for large scale colonializarion, there will need to be an economic purpose. Unless we are somehow post scarcity. Or some materials are found that require zero g for production.

I can see how a planet-moon colony could.

I would like to think space exploration would not be driven by profit. But I am not optimistic. Even the age of exploration was driven by political power and profit.

You really want a future where we will have a 100 year war between the earth naturals and the master space race, because that is what we will be getting with space colonies. I hope you like blue, green, and pink hair, our fashion choices being stuck in a rough late 70s/early 80s period, electronic drums to make a fantastic return in our soundtracks, and having really stupid sounding names, because we will be naming our future generations stuff like full frontal and roy focker.

Farming colonies, which also takes environmental strain off the earth I guess? Assuming you have fully functional colonies you can farm in ideal weather nonstop. You can plant trees for wood and stuff or whatever. It would be a good place to have food production going on. But there would need to be a more ideal government to coordinate stuff like that.

We'll probably destroy ourselves before we're able to terraform anything. I still don't get why we'd wanna bring a dead planet to life instead of saving this one. The sun won't naturally wipe out Earth for a few billion more years and what species lasts that long without transforming into something else.

Mine what though? It is in orbit. Are you gonna mine an asteroid or something.

Tourism might be the easiest thing but seems like a lot of work for just tourism.

Space mine will require on world settlements of some kind unless we get really exotic like blowing things up from orbit capturing it and moving it to the space colony
