Correct it was coined by the British in the 1800s and used as a term to describe an area of their empire, then later adopted by the U.S. as its global colonial efforts expanded. Thank you for sharing the knowledge TC, it is my hope that more and more people and especially organizations, news agencies, etc. that discuss these areas of the world will continue to drop the usage of colonial terms like this.

So you're saying there's about 200 years worth of history with the word and it's become globally accepted in English speaking ex-colonies?
Why not call Japan "Nippon"?
Why not call France "Gaul"?
Why not call Taiwan "Mainland China"?

It's all relative and generally stemming from translations of translations, not colonial intent.

What China does in Africa is investing, it is generally a win-win situation. Though sometimes even China goes a bit too far, it's still better than bombing and invading those countries like the West doesm

Yeah, my country is a colonial state, and like much of latin-america, is built on the blood of the indigenous peoples. I feel like we have progressed somewhat in recognizing this and with some decolonizing efforts, but our societies are still very conservative and will often fight that at every step.

I've had close people tell me that it is good the Spaniards colonized us because they gave us the language and the religion, for example.

Except the Middle East includes Egypt, so referring to it as "West Asia" isn't really accurate either if your are talking about the entire region.

So what did TC actually say about the Xinjiang situation? He should be able to tell us if he was just tricked into saying something naughty.

That's why we also have the term SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) so people can out themselves as being oversensitive and not worth talking to.
