I'm playing the N Sane trilogy and really playing Crash for the first time since I was...8 or something lol. So far I'm almost halfway through the first game and I don't like how floaty and heavy the controls are, combined with the precision some of the jumps require that just feels off. It doesn't feel as good as a Mario game, for instance. And the level design is just okay.

Are the two games after better? Or should I get a steam refund?

The first game is the worst of the bunch but 2 & 3 are huge steps up.

However I was not a fan of the N. Sane Trilogy. The controls and hit detection felt off compared to the original PS1 versions. Personally I would get a refund.

That depends. 2 and 3 are extremely easy platformers with a couple of very annoying challenges for completion.

The time relics are where 2 and 3 really shine though, imo.

That's because it was. For example, PS1 Crash had a box-shaped hitbox while N.Sane Trilogy Crash has a pill-shaped one.

Unpopular opinion, but they're just not great games. They were an experiment in 3D on a console with severe resource limitations and they did a good job at the time of overcoming them, but the compromises made to the fundamental design are so crippling that they can't be overcome without a complete overhaul of everything.

You're crazy if you get a refund for Crash Bandicoot remastered. It's way better than Mario. And IMO, Crash Bandicoot 2 is the peak. At least run through the first level in that one.

it's mediocre with ludicrously strict, tedious, overbloated conditions for 100% completion. levels are about twice as long as they should be, and there are no levels that even feel like crash bandicoot after the first couple, and maybe the pirate world

I prefer the originals because they feel better to control. I don't know who these developers are but they ain't ND thats for sure. I didn't try Crash 4 because I played the level Future Tense and hated it.

I dunno about the remakes, but the originals...

the first game paved the way. It is solid and playable at its core with some wonky difficulty spikes and obviously new mechanics they hadn't perfected. Fun and memorable but not a game you hurry back to after completion.

The second game is where the original series peaked. Perfection of flawed mechanics, seamless implementation of a few new things that improve quality of life, and a fair difficulty flow.

Third game is packed with ideas but the execution is literally just a bunch of half-baked concepts that just barely work for the level(s) they're in. Also, this is the first time where I thought a Crash game was a pain in my ass to maneuver and control. (I didn't notice this in later games in the franchise as much)

I didn't know the remakes control differently than the originals. Most of the time the game is easy, but sometimes it's frustrating and it feels like for reasons out of my control like the wonky, heavy controls. I kept having to redo a platforming bit because I kept falling all the way down to the bottom because I thought I was landing jumps on little up arrow boxes and wasn't. I've been playing platformers all my life but this one just doesn't feel good. I might emulate the first couple games if they really feel better.

The first Crash is heavier than the remakes for sure. 2 and 3 are quite different in design, and tbh it just sounds like you wouldn't like Crash 1 on ps1 either.
