I think people who link the fire (besides for the achievement) either

Don't understand the story and what's going on

Or they tend to have religious thinking and don't see anything wrong with keeping gods around

I bet atheists in real life tend to do the other ending

Those who link the fire become the Soul of Cinder.

Those who become Dark Lord end up dead and the Sable Church of Londor carries their legacy ~ and by dead, I mean part of Nashandras butt

And then you get eaten by Aldia

and then you become part of the Soul of Cinder anyway lol

darkstalker Kaathe connected with the Four Kings, turning them into that singular monster all linked together & creating Darkwraiths out of all of their followers (invaders & zombies, basically). ~ As we see with Manus & as the Abyss tends to do..... Kaathe wants to swallow everything. Thats what the curse does. Total reset. All souls lost. Invader wins. End of story. He is an embodiment of emptiness and dead dragons & the immortal & demons. The void.

This is why you find the Darkwraith armor scattered throughout Drangleic as a clue. Each area contains a fragment of Darkwraith gear.

The land of Drangleic was led by four kings (Vendrick, Iron King, King of Shulva, and the Ivory King), and it quite literally exists in an Abyss w/ an utterly egregious amount of Bloodborne foreshadowing & essentially throws the timeline to the wind in favor of Kings Field references almost nobody will catch.

Everything is topsy turvy and you basically discover that these Dark Lord guys happened upon the Giants from Demons Souls somehow & created a dream tent out of their spirits. Also, they happened upon a Dragon named Sin, the Old Chaos, and... you guessed it.... more Demons (Iron Kings speciality). All of those characters are connected, as a shadow of light within the dark. Dragons. Giants. Demons. Irrevocable Poison. Ice Shrine. The game has one ending, no choices, on repeat, forever.

Until Aldia appears.....

Which is where we get to Dark Souls III, which has overt references to 2 most people dont catch. Yhorm is big one. The end of the game is a huge Earthen Peak to Iron Keep elevator in the sky joke (remember that one?). Yuria wields the Darkdrift. Theres a Giant Tree/Watcher Tree IN Firelink Shrine. Fate of the undead. End of the world. What awaits us? All that fun stuff......

Spending time as a slave of Kaathe, then becoming part of Nashandra, and then being Aldias puppet.... before being forced to Link the Flame & enter a twilight beyond all possible things & visit the world where the Flame was Linked in Lordran.... because thats Aldias M/O.... does not sound like a fun time.

Id rather just go straight to Soul of Cinder, play Valhalla with the Undead, and enjoy the thought that I freed Gwyndolin & the others of the curse in my world (..... until the convergence, the Flame of Sin/Profaned Flame falling out of the sky, Sulyvahn deciding to take a walk through the real world, all the Hollows & parallel Undead from Lordran coming back as Unkindled Ash, Londor Pilgrims deciding that Drangleic isnt finished quite yet, Courland basically getting sacked, Oceiros going nuts with Paledrake power, etc)

Living in the Majula mansion & being taunted by avatars of Kaathe until you go insane & get eaten by a dark girl might be fun.

Remember, Aldia was completely obsessed with the Painting of Ariamis & the existence of something beyond the end.

In the context of DS1, linking seems to be the good ending.

Kaathe and Dark Salkers seem to be sketchy at best.

I think DS2 isn't relevant here much.

DS3, strong argument that walking and breaking the cycle might be the good ended so to speak. But it is still hard to tell, ringed city locusts and all.

The narrator speaks the prophecy from the intro during the ending where you kill the Fire Keeper in Dark Souls 3, and you dont get a trophy.

I view those as two very strong reasons to take it as the good ending.

Just how much suffering is there in the Dark Souls world?

We always see things at their unraveling points, at peak rot. But we see the carcasses of seeming great cultures. Maybe things aren't that bad for vast tracts of time for regular Joe's.

Like, I wrestle with the idea of the linking comes at great costs but there are still empheremal periods of stability and great happiness between the collapses. Not linking ends the bad but also the good. Just stillness. Or something like that.

Originally, it was meant to flip Demons Souls on its head where walking away from the Souls throne was a good thing (remember?) & evoke the age old questions of martyrdom vs kingdom (similar to Berserk) & what it means to be human, is there a god, etc. But there is a larger story. Without going into detail and random ass made up fanfiction lore, walking away is objectively the best option. I'd even go as far as to say that the lord souls and dark soul fragments should be gathered and placed back where they belong, wherever that may be. Return the world to its natural state, end the cycle of suffering, forever undo the convoluted twists in the universe.

The cycle will never end. The fire keeper states at the end of 3 that cinders will remain to alight once more
