The minimum age for marriage across most of the US is 18, but every state has exemptions such as parental consent or pregnancy which allow younger children to tie the knot.
A former high-profile Republican governor for New Jersey declined to sign into law a measure that would have made his state the first to ban child marriage without exception. Chris Christie claimed it would conflict with religious customs.

Hes 100% right. Not too long ago a state tried to do just this and got pushback from Republicans. It never went through.

The laws are in place to protect child abusers and the victim's families from the shame of their child being abused. It's not statutory rape or child molestation if you're married, apparently.

I knew a girl that got married at 17 because her and her 18 year old new army boyfriend were "so much in love."

It lasted less than a year. The worst part? The kids talked the parents into allowing it.

Wouldn't the "loopholes" be necessary for traditions like arranged marriages? When I was in high school, one of my classmates had an arranged marriage and she was married before we even graduated. Her husband was also a teenager.

Arranged marriages should also be illegal.

Eh, it's not a part of my culture, so I don't really feel like I should judge. Someone else said they wouldn't completely ban because of religious reasons and that was just the first religion based marriage, involving minors, that came to my mind.

Sounds like a ""legal"" way to sell your daughter to someone. I imagine this still happens in the super culty religion groups that teach girls that they're inferior.

But it's totally gay people ruining the "sanctity of marriage" and not this bullshit right?

They'd probably argue that men in Biblical times married young girls, so by God's law, it's fine.

Nope. They can, upon turning 18, marry the person that they've been "arranged" to marry if they choose to go along with it - no need to make a special exemption, and it's especially wrong to give any legal backing to forcing anyone into one.
