Me and the wife have just moved into our first house on Thursday evening. Last night the cat came downstairs for the first time (hes been really scared) and sat on my wifes knee purring away. Literally 3 minutes later he fell off her knee into the floor. We assumed hed just slipped and even tried getting it in camera for the lulz but when he didnt move and I picked him up he was just already gone. Body completely floppy and eyes were gone if you know what I mean.

Wife was in tears even tried giving the cat mouth to mouth but was in vain. Took him to the vets to be 100% sure he was dead and said it was likely a sudden heart attack or brain haemorrhage. His eyes had gone blood shot so probably the latter. Wtf man the wife is in tears and I havent cried for 20 years and had to pull over on the way home because I just broke down.

I know not everyone is a cat person or dog person but for those of you that are hug your little one extra tight this evening to make sure that they know they are loved.

Just needed to vent sorry.

sorry for your loss.

losing a pet is always hard, especially when it happens prematurely, when you thought they'd be in your life a lot longer.

I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine something like that. That is so sad. At least he was with you guys when it happened. He probably didn't feel anything and it just happened in an instant

Sorry to hear that.

I thought my cat died earlier this week. She had gone missing for 2 days and then suddenly she showed up again in the morning ready for breakfast like nothing happened.

I'm so sorry to hear that. His life was filled with love and he was with his people in his last moments (which I'm sure brought him comfort).

Im sorry buddy. When I lost my daddy pug, it damn near killed me. Pugs get collapsed tracheas sometimes and thats what my Boony had. I held him as the shot was administered. One of the saddest days of my life.

I do still have his two kids. Theyre 12 this year and the vet said they look pretty good for their age!

I'm so sorry. I lost a cat a year ago who was 12 and I thought that was too young, but 4 is so much worse. I hope you'll be alright.

I doubt you were unkind to the little guy. We always tend to be the hardest on ourselves and think about what we could have or would have done differently.

There is no point in doing that. Dont let your strongest memory of your friend be a sad one. He wouldnt want that. Cry as much as you need to but dont blame yourself.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Its been a few days and the pain is still there but not as raw as it was.

Ive always had pets since I was a kid but this is the first one that was actually mine and the first one Ive been involved in the death off.

It does make me so grateful to my mum who would always be the one to take our cats to the vets when they were old or ill to be put down and now have at least some idea of how heart breaking that must be.

I also really do applaud anyone who looks after sick or ill pets or works in animal shelters.

Me and the wife are going to wait a while but we will definitely be getting more cats in the near future ideally from a shelter. There are so many good animals out there who need homes so if you have ever thought about getting one please do consider it as an option as you can make a massive difference to a poorly treated cats life.

That sucks so bad. I'm sorry, TC. Lots of love to you and her.

It's not the same, but my ex had two cats and one got terribly sick suddenly after playing outside one day; it was dead within a few days. Really threw the whole household for a loop, especially considering the other cat was absolutely fine (they were littermates, so they even had the same cat DNA).

Sorry man that sucks. Especially if its out of nowhere.

With pets its a weird compromise because you know one day they will be gone but you never expect it to be so soon. Very easy to not want to love another again especially if its a sudden thing and they have so much more life to live but there are thousands of cats out there looking for a good home and while they will never replace the ones lost they all have their own unique quirks and personalities you will learn to love just as much but for different reasons.

I'm always worried overnight / when I go out that I'll get home and find something's happened to one (or worse, all) of my birds. Especially after losing one in the past - she seemed completely fine in the morning when I went out; but if I'd have gotten home an hour later that day I wouldn't have had a chance to say goodbye.

(Luckily it was a genetic thing, not environmental or contagious, so the other bird - only had the two at the time - was fine. The other one is still alive today and got three more since.)

That's horrific. To find your young cat deceased would have been terrible enough, but to have the poor guy drop right in front of you like that is absolutely heartbreaking.
