I'm not going to judge someone for it. I live on my own while my sister doesn't. Some people have circumstances, I'm not going to be a dick about it.

Not a knock, but I feel like they most likely have some sort of mental illness preventing them from having the ability to venture out. Basically a homeless person with family support.

I actually fit this category along with a lot of my cousins who have mentally illness. Anxiety and the no motivation from depression prevents me from keeping jobs.

I split the rent on a house and other bills with my mom and 2 siblings.

A number of circumstances put us in this situation and we are happy with how we've made due.

I will admit there is some mental illness involved.

Honestly, they probably feel trapped like everyone is judging them constantly and find it difficult to take any action as such. This tends to get cumulatively worse with time.

Depends on if they're lazy or just have no interest in life.

See not everyone makes $50 to a $100 a hour to live on their own.

LMAO, you can't possibly believe that's the minimum to move out. That's a six figure salary lol

I don't care option is not voting. Or one of the intentionally silly options.

Honestly I don't think about it other then I'm sure there is a reason why. Maybe they have to take care of their parents, maybe they are afraid to venture out and start paying for more bills than just their cell phone, maybe they have to live with their parents like in Duncaans case.

I stopped living with my parents when I was 21 and secured a job that paid great and consistently. Man did I love that first year or so when I lived by myself in my own apartment. It felt so freeing.

It is in large parts of the country.

Gotta have first and last month's rent, security deposit, and a buttload of surprise fees most apartments throw at you. Don't forget the non-refundable application fee almost every apartment charges. When you add in the cost of renting a U-Haul (you're not moving your bed frame in your crappy little Honda Civic) and gas... Yeah, you need to make a lot to save up that much while still paying all your usual expenses.

For my current apartment, that would probably add up to... about four grand, just to get moved in. Oh, then you have to pay to turn on the electricity, the water, the cable, etc. Potentially have to re-register your car. Update your license. Literally none of this shit is free. This is not feasible for most workers.

I think our hyperized consumer culture plays a role in why so many adults still live at home. People confuse their wants with needs and would rather live with their parents then have to make changes to their livestyle and spending habits.

I used to work with a guy who was covered with tattoos, had a nice car, clothes, always going to bars and buying the latest tech and gadgets.

But he still lives with his parents because he can't afford to move out.

I think this post hits it right on the head. Its not that people cant afford to move out or its too tough out there. Its the fact people dont want to give up their lifestyle and sacrifice for their independence. People dont want to say no to going out on the weekends. People dont want to say no to new cars/clothes/consoles. I know because Ive been there.

If you can learn when to say no and sacrifice its not impossible. Money is more accessible than ever.

Cost of living is high though. Absolute bullshit there are no laws that limit rent increases.

Im 30 next year and I feel great shame over this... makes me feel like a bitch for some reason...

Yet at the same time, I wouldnt be able to live with "roommates" and if I leave, they will for sure lose the house. Dad is an alcoholic and has COPD, no ability to take care of himself and has zero understand of how money works. Mum has struggled all of my life. She has highschool, he has less, both are retirement age yet have literally 0 savings... Living cheque to cheque off old age pensions. Im the first person in our family (of 50+) to graduate from University and have only just gotten a full time job (though I only make 30K)

Makes no sense to leave and spend 1300 a month in rent to some asshole, to lose my homestead rather than work together and maintain what little bit we have

A friend of mine moved back in with his parents after his divorce which was fine short-term but it's been 2 years now and he's still there. He evidentally needs someone to do everything for him because he's too scared to go out and make his own way through life. every time i bring it up with him, he thinks of some new excuse where it's somehow not his fault that he hasn't found his own place. It's pathetic.

While not quite in my 30s, I'd say aunt qualifies as well. No real reason to move out. Like my family, cheap rent, and still do as I please. I guess it can be ackward with girls, but ehhh. Just don't bring them back, lol.

I wasnt able to move out until a few months after I turned 30. Fortunately a lot of things aligned at the right time

I would have definitely moved out sooner if I could. Dont get me wrong, I love my parents, but living with them was getting old. Especially because my mom didnt work or really go out so I basically never had any alone time, and my dad didnt seem to understand / appreciate how physically taxing my job was and still made me do strenuous work around the house that I shouldnt have been doing (and ultimately led to some permanent injuries).

So Ive been on my own for almost three years and its been wonderful I definitely recommend it.

I mean, if it's a quick fuck just go back to her place, if not, well that's a sacrifice ya might have to make living at home.

Although, if it's a serious relationship, I would hope the girl understands, especially if you're no just staying home playing games all day.

I don't care. My mom lives with me, I bring in over 90% of the household income, but some people still think I live with my mom because...she's older than me I guess? It's quite annoying, everyone has different circumstances and people shouldn't be judgmental. I'm not going to force my mom to go to some crap apartment or nursing home because other people are judging.
Good for you.

Yeah, agreed. I did say that my gf lives with her parents so it's cool. There does unfortunately seem to be a double standard for men vs women. In my situation, she moves in with me next month so it worked out well.

Yeah, both me and my GF live at home with our parents, so we don't have any problem with either. However, when I was dating and on Tinder and such, sooo many girls still lived at home and I would see the double standard there.

That is the problem. People think you move out and instantly should be able to afford your own house. No. I lived in shitty apartments until I saved enough to move into nicer ones.

That stuff comes with time and effort. People dont want to go through the hard stage. Im still saving for my first house. Ill wait as long as it takes but Im not gonna just stay with my parents until the perfect scenario just works out. Thats not real life.

Ok but how much are you working? Are you working 40-50 hours a week? If so you can probably afford to move out. That might mean getting a roommate or making working a side job.

It really comes down to what are you willing to sacrifice to do it. That doesnt always have to be luxury items. It might mean you have to sacrifice solitude to live with someone else. I would still rather do that then live my parents though.

My point wasnt to judge anyway. I lived with my parents after college for a bit so I get it. Im just saying this notion that people just cant afford to it period isnt true. They can afford it but with considerable sacrifice.

The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. Yes, housing costs are overpriced but there are also a lot of people who are just lazy. I know because I used to be one of them. I got tired of not being in control of my life and decided Id do whatever necessary.

Youre exaggerating. Ive literally never lived anywhere you have to pay first AND last months rent. I dont think Ive ever paid up front for utilities either since they are billed on usage. I know of several apartments that had move in specials. My sisters apartment actually had a deal that was first three months of rent free.

I could move in, cover first months rent and almost fully furnish an apartment with like $2500.
