Which?

I back in.

Watching people back out of spots is so slow and awkward and I've quite literally come inches from being hit by idiots gunning 25-30 mph through the parking lot that you can't see when backing out (without a camera, at least)

Backing in inconveniences everyone around you

Pulling through is great until you head-on collide with someone coming in from the next lane

I always back in at home. It took a while but now I'm quick enough and good enough that I back into most parking spots (though I still pull through if that's an option).

So does backing out. Defaulting to backing in but not doing so if there are cars right behind you doubles the chance of no one being inconvenienced when backing.

So does backing out.

No it doesn't. Backing in requires pulling past the spot, and carefully backing up between parked cars. Backing out into the comparatively open lane takes half as long and doesn't create confusion around you in the lot. Backing into parking spaces serves literally no purpose and takes longer.

How exactly would you do that, short of turning on your signal which would not clearly communicate your intent?

Backing in only takes twice as long as backing out if you're not experienced at backing in. The times are comparable for me. And yes, it can create confusion which is why I sometimes choose not to do it, depending on traffic.

But it absolutely serves a purpose. When you back in, you always have clear sight lines on where you're going and on the cross traffic, both when parking and when leaving the parking spot. When you back out you do not have clear sight lines on cross traffic. Backing in--and pulling out forward--is demonstrably safer.

Eh, in my area the parking spots are big enough that I can easily leave a foot in my parking space behind me. But yes, if I'm planning to be putting something large/bulky into my trunk that's another reason I might choose not to back in that time.

That's it. Just turn on your blinker when you see the spot you want. I won't know if you're pulling in or backing in until you actually start to do it, but at least I'll be expecting something.

I just fully expect anyone in front of me to take any available spot

I dont usually have a preference. Backing into a spot is easy, but backing out of a spot is fine too. My suv has little mirrors in the rear pillars that show what's coming from either side, and my car has a backup camera.

I reverse in exclusively, to the point where i go at the same speed as people going nose in.

I can't go nose in. I always end up too close to one car or on an angle or both. Reversing in dead centre every time

Where's the parallel park option? 90% of my parking is parallel because in my city, everyone parks on the street (many homes don't even have driveways or garages)

as for parking in a lot, back in, always back in. Sometimes I'll pull through, but I don't like that. It's poor form.

the backup camera helps but sometimes it's easier to use just the mirrors. the problem with the backup cam is it inherantly makes you put your head down and get tunnel vision, and you lose sight of your blind spots.

i also drive a corolla so they're really easy to fit almost anymore.

Backing in is technically the safest.

My gf works in a safety-critical field and all driving for the company requires employees back in.

Reasons are, less likely to back into something and pulling out enables you clear sight lines of incoming traffic.

Your car has better handling in reverse it literally makes no sense to pull in unless you're in an angled parking lot that's designed for pulling in and backing out.

90 degree parking spaces are designed for backing in, no contest

Do you park next to cars that don't have windows? Do you not have a rear view mirror?

But it takes less time to pull out.

By about a second. Meanwhile backing in takes 5-10 seconds (or longer if the driver is stupid), when pulling in takes literally 1-2. Overall backing in wastes more time and it isn't even close.
