got completely wiped on a soulsiver run by bugsy. scyther with u-turn?? outsped and OHKO'd my whole team (started with chikorita -- was worried about falkner being flying type so i got it to a bayleef before doing that one and was way overleveled -- then got to bugsy and the trainers still had some like level 9-10 pokemon so i figured it wasn't going to be too horrible.)

whoops. scyther was like seven levels higher than the gym trainer mon.

did a black 2 run and got hammered in the first gym by cherian. normal type lillipup with work up and STAB with nothing to resist (also outspeeding everything i had)? goodbye

is it generally acceptable to google gym pokemon during the run? or is that frowned upon

i wouldve probably prepped a little harder for bugsy had i known that shit was coming. and i would've gotten some fodder because bugsy will start with scyther, then u-turn to metapod and kakuna, so it would be good to have trash mon to sacrifice for the u-turns

Your first mistake in SoulSilver was not picking Cyndaquil. Chikorita's bad enough in a casual run, but in a Nuzlocke? That's a bruh moment right there.

totodile is usually my go-to in gen 2 but i actually straight up randomized by just spinning the thing around and around. landed on chikorita

too bad because i had a quiet slowpoke too

Damn, leaving even your starter up to chance? You know what, I can respect that.

There's status effects and priority moves to help deal with strong things that give you issues.

I only google so I know what the levels of the gym leaders are. I use the following rules when I do nuzlockes these days:

Standard nuzlocke rules
Can't use items during battle, hold items are okay
Battle mode is set
When I enter a gym I can't leave to heal at the pokemon center until I finish it
Standard white out rule, it's a game over if I ever do
I can't out level the next gym leader

The last rule means, say I have 0 badges and the leader's strongest pokemon is level 12 pokemon. If anything reaches level 13 before I start fighting the gym leader, they count as dead. Once I talk with the gym leader my level cap raises to the next respective leader's highest level thing. When I get the 8th badge the new cap is the champion.

I did a Nuzlocke of Black 2 and died to the Champion.
Tried an Alpha Sapphire run after and had a much easier time.

are there limitations to grinding in nuzlocke?

The 'hardcore' rules are that your mons can't be a higher level than the next gym leader, but most people don't do that, I think.

Trainer IDmethod is pretty common. Look at the last digit of your trainer ID. 1-3 grass 4-6 fire 7-9 water 0 reroll or pick it yourself. For my current x run, I used that for my starter and the second to last one for the gift kanto starter.

Usually game knowledge and familiarity will be a huge asset to have. In HGSS there are 2 caves and a trade, so theres a near guaranteed chance of you having a Zubat, Onix, or Geodude by the time you fight Bugsy, which sweeps with either Wing Attack or Rock Throw and hard resists U-Turn. Cheren is a bit harder since you have a much smaller pool of potential Pokemon at that time.

I'll probably do my first ever nuzlocke on my first playthrough of brilliant diamond. Never played D/P before either.

Trades are generally against the rules of a nuzlocke since you didn't catch it and nickname it yourself. :l

Had a pretty close call in one of the DS remakes, went through a cave and after the cave the rival showed up as is his wont, except the bird I had caught to deal with his Bayleef was woefully underleveled and even through "not very effective" was getting chunked for like 1/3rd its health. I sent out my Gastly and literally cursed that thing to death >_> and somehow none of my pokemon died

My very first nuzlocke run was in FireRed. To my delight, I found a pikachu in the Veridian forest first encounter. Sadly, I killed it with a crit. Never again.
