Irish? That's interesting. Speak some Irish for no reason.

They are levels of language proficiency, I believe. A1 is the lowest.

It's the official recognized language of Ireland. I started using it daily since I worked in the school with the Irish teachers and a few other people who are fluent to practice it since I never used it outside of high school

Native English. Fluent Japanese once (probably 75-80% now) - Japanese wife, good Spanish (L.A. native boy), and Italian.

Think in English, but at one point in Japan, I dreamed in Japanese. I only realized it after a month of doing so. Once in a blue moon I'll still have a Japanese dream.

Self-taught in German, took 3 years of honors spanish in HS. My spanish has vastly deteriorated over the past decade but ive been in Spain for a couple weeks so a decent amount is coming back slowly, and I did some practice before leaving. Its just been coasting at a low level in my brain for a long time.

German I started out with Duolingo about 4 years ago. Eventually used Assimil, listened to lots of German music, podcasts for learning, lots of youtube videos. Now I use Anki for spaced repetition daily and just try to read news/articles/etc and listen to/watch authentic content as much as possible. Comprehensible input is key and although a variety of techniques is important reading is probably the most important one

Where do you start when you want to learn a new language? I have really wanted to finish learning Spanish and learn some German, but I have no idea which program/app/site to use if I actually want good results.

I would be willing to pay (a fair amount), but I would really need some feedback on what to use or not use.

Good classes are worth paying for, particularly if youre taking them in a place that speaks the language, but im a firm believer that it can be done free or mostly free.

Duolingo and/or Memrise is a great place to start and get your feet wet. Youll see if you like the language and get some basic grammar and vocab down. Important thing to remember is that theyre only one tool and will only provide a foundation. Too many people mistakenly believe they can learn a language with them

I've always wondered if bilingual people mentally translate their second language to their first or if they just equally function with both.

The former happens at the beginning but eventually the latter comes about. Just depends on how frequently both languages are used and how fluent one is

With Urdu and English, the latter

With German, the former. There have been times where I've been so tired that I can no longer speak German, since it requires a conscious (albeit small) effort. Talking to others who have German as a second language that they learned later in life, it seems I'm not the only one either

I'm fluent in English, as it's my only spoken language I know. However, I'm pretty proficient with ASL.

I used to work with a deaf person, and between the years I worked with him and tons of practice, I'm pretty good. I'm a little slower than I'd like, but as he said I'd only been doing it for a couple of years.

For me, total immersion. Find a person of interest, part of town or country where you can go to and just soak everything up.

Have a dictionary, but don't carry it. Look up shit at home. Ask friends (with good grammar - don't ask a Trump for English lessons for example) to correct you. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
