I know Sonic CD came out a year after 2, but it feels like it's some quasi-sequel to Sonic 1, but before Sonic 2 >_> CD's sprite looks just like Sonic 1's, the spindash is wonky as fuck while 2 had it perfected, there's no Tails, no Super Sonic, and the level design doesn't feel as polished as in 2 and 3.

So did Sega have both these games made at the same time and just held on to CD until the CD add-on came out a year later? I'm sure some Sonic fan knows the deal-io >_>

Sonic CD was primarily developed in Japan and Sonic 2 was primarily developed in America, so they went different directions. Sega of Japan and America going different directions also led to weird shit like the Saturn and 32X being developed at the same time.

Sonic 3 was also Sega Technical Institute (Sega of America), not Sonic Team (Sega of Japan). But it's important to know most of the staff, especially the directors and higher ups were Japanese at Sega Technical Institute, so this means they're both primarily developed by Japanese teams.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 1992 Both
Sonic Spinball 1993 American
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 1994 Japanese
Sonic & Knuckles 1994 Japanese

What the hell Sonic Team in Japan was doing during all of this is a good question.
