I will echo Doom's thoughts on people just not understanding what the fuck a residential school is.

Living in California, we have an entire year of grade school that teaches about California history and the Spanish Missions that were set up here. It went into some detail about the conquistadors taking the Native Americans out of their homes and forcing them into schools but the full impact of that really wasn't expanded upon for me until I was in college and an Anthropology class related it to residential schools(I think they had a different name, but the same thing) in Australia.

Its weird how America is far more open to talk about native history, even the fucked up parts. Canada just sweeps it under the rug and acts like it was a safe space for US Indians looking for a place to retreat.

The articles Ive read have left me confused. Is there an implication that children were killed or died from neglect from the teachers at these schools? Were the kids not living with their parents? Or is the only crime that the schools removed the markers from an indigenous graveyard that was on their property?

Yep the UK is definitely bad at it. We get told Nelson lost his arm from a cannon blast but not that it was during an attempt at taking Tenerife that ended with us getting bodied as we were dumb enough to try and take an island surrounded by massive fortifications.

Yeah, it's extremely fucked up, but not surprising, honestly. Once they found the first grave with over 200 bodies in it, I knew it was just a matter of time before they continued digging into the other schools.

As a Canadian, I'm incredibly distressed at what our country has done, or allowed to be done, to the indigenous population.

It's fucking gross.

The fact is that the U.S. is probably the least racist white-majority country on Earth. The fact that the U.S. has such a large minority population so that people of different races are forced to interact with each other regularly, and that we dont sweep our history of slavery and racism under the rug (for my entire life at least), means that we can seem like we have more racism than other countries.

The Tran Atlantic slave trade is taught fairly extensively though at least I guess? And I was taught about some of the terrible shit the Allies did in WW2.

I dont know if this is a new school. But the previous one I knew about, the graves were unmarked and hidden. It's believed the dead are students from many many decades ago, died either from neglect, abuse or full on murder and secretly buried. Elderly relatives still alive of the missing say they were told the students ran away from the school

This probably happened in every place on earth that had evangelizing of the natives and forced schools for kids to get converted

Canadian Catholic schools are part of the public system. So this was not really done solely under the church's directive.
