I'm not really happy about what's going to be the first crossover set in MtG(Warhammer 40K and LOTR are confirmed I think?), but I'm less bothered that this one is DnD. I'm hoping I can actually go to a pre-release now that I'm vaccinated and the in-store play suspension is lifted in the US, but I haven't actually bothered looking for where I'll play since my LGS of 5 years closed ;_;

Lmao. I feel like every time I come back to the game it's worse. Looking at Standard from the outside since about 2016-ish made it look like a mess. It seemed every new set for a while had cards getting banned in at least one format, with Eldraine and MH1 in particular being absolute dogshit for the game. Secret Lair's are scummy and I realize I'm part of the problem for getting two of them(Seb Mckinnon and Phyrexian text Praetors). But above all I just miss playing, online play doesn't interest me a whole lot.

I don't spend money on paper Magic unless I can get my brother to play, and when he does it's only once and then we never play again for a few months, maybe even a year. So I'll just stick with Arena.

Arena also does all the math for you.

Why do people get upset over banned cards? Do you want broken things in the game? I get wasting your money on something you cant use, but you dont need to buy the most broken cards in the game to win

Good game design doesn't mean you're making mistakes in multiple formats every set. New standard sets shouldn't shake up multiple formats, especially non-rotating one's. Lurrus getting banned in Vintage was unprecedented, and Companion(which literally needed errata) is just one of the variance-reducing mechanics that I'm getting tired of seeing.

I expect this shit from other card games, not Magic. I used to play jank in Modern, but since I stopped playing there's nothing left for me besides EDH and limited.

Dragonborns just being Dragons probably means we'll be getting some low CMC one's which could be neat. Reminds me of how Dragonoids or whatever they're called in Duel Masters also got support from Dragon-matters cards. Oh and I wanted to mention that one of the DnD Commander decks is named Dungeons of Death, so it's probably gonna be full of cards that venture.

Don't know how I feel about the mechanic yet. I assume the most playable one's will either be cards that are already good but happen to venture too, or something like "Whenever you X, venture into the dungeon."

If the defending player conrols a plains, the creature with plainswalk can't be blocked.

Seriously though, PW's are permanents with activated abilities called loyalty abilities. They ETB with a number of loyalty counters which is the bottom right number, and the cost of loyalty abilities is the +/- on them. You can activate one loyalty ability per turn during either of your main phases. IIRC you don't have to pass priority after casting one so you can immediately use one? Also you can redirect a creature swinging at a player to a PW, I forget if you can still redirect after blockers are declared.

I hate everything they've done recently. The 80 different rarities and special arts. The crossovers. The minisets that are for some unknown reason black bordered. The blatantly obvious overpowered standard formats that quickly lead to erratas and bans. I remember the like 8 year stretch where nothing was banned in standard since Jace. It very much feels like a company running itself into the ground because it senses an imminent bankruptcy, but magic will always be fun though, right?

idk I have alot of money tied up in old magic cards and the past few years have, for the first time ever, seriously made me consider cashing out before they all tank.

you have to pass priority when you cast them, but that only allows responses while the spell is on the stack. (ie, when they can be counterspell'd). once they resolve, the active player gets priority (this is true for all spells, not only 'walkers), so he or she can immediately activate the 'walker.

there's no rules redirection anymore. when creatures attack, their controller assigns each to be attacking a player or 'walker. each creature can attack a different defender (except in certain multiplayer variants, which can restrict legal defenders). the defending player can block with their creatures any creatures attacking them or a 'walker they control (again, MP rules may vary). unblocked creatures, or trample damage, dealt to the 'walker removes that many loyalty counters.

spells that used to be able to damage players have now been errata'd to explicitly say whether they can damage 'walkers, too. check with your local oracle (or Scryfall)

New mechanics/ability words exist almost every set though. The only way to avoid it is to never play non-reprint draftable sets.

They are making more money and the game is more popular than ever. The prices will be going up for the most part. Yeah printing cards way too busted is annoying, but during those 8 years you mentioned a bunch of people complained about how weak the newer cards were and wanted a higher power level for standard cards. So they listened but pushed it overboard with some of the pushed mythics, mostly green and blue.

But there is a definite upside for limited players. We are in kind of a drafting golden age where every set is a really good draft experience. If you wanna get the best experience of play right now I suggest getting super into drafting. With blocks gone it's annoying how each plane and their new mechanics don't get a ton of love, but they usually work super well in smaller decks with the cards from just that set. The single set over blocks model is a big improvement over block drafting so we get at least 4 totally unique sets for limited every year.

And the there are still only 4 rarities. The special art is just something cool to look at, with literally no logical downside, aside from people who feel a need to get every version of every card in every set. The cool arts look nice for people who like that, and it drives the prices down for the normal versions of those cards for people who only care about gameplay.

But I agree on the crossover worlds for the most part. It is weird to see different characters from random non magic worlds. Some crossovers I think make sense like DnD, but Walking Dead and Stranger things seem pretty dumb if they end up being really good. But the thing is most magic players are super casual, and they think that they are pretty cool. Plus people who just like to collect things from series they like would be into it. So it's pretty whatever. Not gonna lie if they make one of the 40k commander decks the Orks, I will probably get it.

See, like this. People complain when the new sets don't effect old formats as much as they want. Other people also complain that they effect them too much. What's wrong with standard and draft mechanics? Draft is a big part of the game, and so is standard. Draft is arguably the best, and limited in general is the purest form of magic, closest to the original intention for the game being just a player with a few cards that they happened to buy and open in packs and making what they can out of it. In the beginning they didn't think people would be sooo into it that they would know every card and look up what all the best ways to use them were. It was more about the newer player experience of finding some cool new things opening a few packs or whatever.

Gavin briefly talked about the face cards for the AFC Commander decks and the deck colors(no actual card spoilers though <_<). According to random Reddit posts they're all original characters, which kinda disappionts me. Like why have a crossover with something if you're not gonna take every chance you have to use its characters?

That would be great in singleton gameplay and that's about it.

On a side note, Wizards needs to put in a "Don't be a little bitch." slogan in. Make it replace "oops." Tired of sitting through 3 timers if a player decides to bitch out when they lose.

i mean, that's fair, and i think maro said something similar.

but, why not do the first set as five, with color associations? it'd arguably even lower the AP, as (for example) the red/white deck would likely benefit from the red or white dungeon effects more than the other three.

i dunno, the entire game is built on fives. so anytime we stray from that, even for decent reasons, it hits me like the uncanny valley effect.
