Was the final battle cooler in the books?

I got so pissed with how generic it was in the movies. Ohhh my god a castle seige with wizards shooting the equivalent of arrow and cannon spells. What a great display of creativity in your magical world >___>

pretty sure they added that scene to the movie because there was barely anything in the book.

Its super quick. They gave it the Hollywood treatment in the movie. In the book, Harry is believed to be dead after Voldemort hits him with the killing curse in the forest, and they bring him back to the castle. A battle erupts inside, and in the commotion, Harry takes the opportunity to escape under his invisibility cloak. He then reveals himself before everyone, and he and Voldemort have a stare down and a back-and-forth about how each of them will win. Voldemort then goes for the killing curse again, and Harry uses Expelliarmus at the same time. While Voldemort had the Master Wand, the wand saw Harry as his rightful owner. The spell rebounded, hitting Voldemort and killing him once and for all.

I prefer the book to the movie, by far. The movie is a ton of random special effects filler.

in the book I went back because I thought I missed something with lupin and nympho dying. Honestly I was surprised the movie let Neville kill Nagini and they didnt have Ron do it.

I mean it was important for Neville to do it. It would completely change the story.

Like if they made Harry stab the locket over Ron.

Absolutely. In the books, hes absolutely brave. He really only fears spiders and Voldemort (and everyone fears him). His biggest issue can be his jealousy at times.

The movies make him out to be a sniveling coward who is 5 seconds away from crying at all times.

Yeah and Harry trying to date her after her last crush got murdered is easily the most painful literature I've ever read. I don't think I could ever do a full re-read of the series just because of those chapters.

The spell rebounded, hitting Voldemort and killing him once and for all.

it's worth noting that the nature of the battle in the books is quite different as well:

the defenders were initially severely worn down, and the battle resumed outside initially as the death eaters were ambushed by an army of centaurs and a second army of wizards brought by slughorn (along with many good slytherins). aside from voldemort himself, they got their asses kicked before harry even revealed himself, he did so principally to protect molly weasley (who had just killed lestrange) and prevent anyone else from dying at voldemort's hands.

and he revealed himself not even necessarilly to fight voldemort, but to warn him that he had already lost, and a worse fate awaited him if he fought on. harry literally explicitly warned voldemort that harry was the true master of the wand, and that it would kill voldemort if he tried to use it against harry.

back against the wall, voldemort could not imagine doing anything other than trying to murder harry (again). the fight was over after a single casting, there was no wands locking and no climactic struggle between them. voldemort fired one shot and killed himself instantly.

The worst part of the Battle of Hogwarts was Neville killing Nagini. In the books it's short but sweet. Voldemort invites Neville to join him, and Neville defies him. So Voldemort binds him with a spell, puts the Sorting Hat on him, and sets it on fire. Neville breaks free, pulls the Griffindor's sword out of the hat, and cuts Nagini's head off in one swing. In the movie Voldemort mocks him, and then Neville gives some goofy speech. Then there's a stupid chase with the trio trying to kill Nagini before Neville finally does.

I also didnt care for the showdown between Molly and Bellatrix. The movie had her come in slowly and sorta whisper the say away from my daughter you bitch line before they just dueled. The book gave me the impression that Molly saw it from across the room, flipped out, and came in to save Ginny in an adrenaline induced rage, jumping into the fight at 100mph.

Also, due to the movie giving a long, drawn out fight between Harry & Voldemort, we never got to see Voldemort taking on McGonagall, Kingsley and Slughorn all at once. I would have liked to see that play out in the movie for a bit.

I think it be point was supposed to be that they shared that tragedy, which brought them together in a way. Harry already liked her, and then the murder of Cedric created an additional bond.

Harry was super annoyed that all Cho wanted to talk about is Cedric and his final moments, when all Harry wanted to do is have a good "snog" with her

I really like their relationship and that shared experience they had when Harry found out Luna could see the thestralls as well, and how she was the only one he could talk to about the death of Sirius.

In the movies the girl they got to play Luna looks like a British/less attractive Emily Kinney, but I like the story behind her casting. She was a huge fan of the books and complete Potter enthusiast, and then she got cast in the role as Luna.
