Aside from their name not being the most PC thing nowadays, they're human-like but "neither man nor woman." In practice, this means they look and act like particularly flamboyant drag queens. It's kind of debatable about whether they're negative or positive representation. Some people believe they're just horrible stereotypes and they're not exactly wrong. But the magypsies are also quite heroic characters and their demeanor and physical appearance are never criticized. The game is already super niche and the crowd who would actually buy it would be pisses about the game being altered. Especially if those alterations are heavy. If they keep the game the way it is, it will assuredly draw controversy.
