That's just a 2D game. "HD 2D" has become a moniker for Octopath Traveler type graphics (for whatever reason).

Before you complain I also think it's a dumb name, but Square trade marked it and I see it more and more in nerd circles.

Something like a purposely retro experience based on the Game Boy graphics could be kind of neat. But for a modern title, no.

That's kinda the vibe that Gen5 went for. It worked, but I like 3D Pokemon and feel like HD2D would be a step back.

I saw it posed as a solution for the complaints in regards to bad animations, graphics, and cut pokedex. In theory it would be easier to update and maintain high quality pixel art and improve the surrounding graphical effects through generations.

It's not an unreasonable argument. Personally I think Pokemon has become significantly less visually appealing since gen V, but a lot of people will choose low quality 3D over high quality 2D for immersion purposes.
