The Sephiroth you were chasing throughout the game wasn't the real Sephiroth, it was a piece of Jenova (Jenova: Death?) masquerading as him. All of the dudes in black cloaks were just various pieces of Jenova that Hojo had siphoned off in an attempt to clone/make another Sephiroth. Their only use in Sephiroth's plot was to go to the Crater and be reabsorbed by Jenova.

And for the one that has me a bit confused: Cloud never really existed, he was born in a test tube out of Sephiroth and Jenova parts. The game hasn't said this yet, but my assumption is that parts of Zack were also used in some way which is why he has Zack's memories. Which, in fairness, I'm also just assuming Zack is the black-haired dude you see in the real flashback. What's confusing me is that Tifa seems to know him, she didn't just recognize that he had Zack's memories. She calls him Cloud unprompted.

Actually quite impressed with this plot twist btw. I knew Aeris died, but despite Cloud being the face of this franchise, I never knew his origin story.

For one, just because you're born in a test tube doesn't mean you don't exist. But no, he was born naturally, he was just taken in to be part of an experiment.

Pretty much there, Rufus is about to execute them. I know Zack is important because I went into that topic about the remake and skimmed some spoilers there. There's also a house in one of the towns where a couple talks about Zack and apparently Tifa and Aeris both have dialogue there which I completely missed because I wasn't using them.

This makes sense then. Zack isn't from Nibelheim, so all of Cloud's memories from living there and being friends with Tifa can't be his. He must have just inherited Zack's memories from when Sephiroth burned the place down. I guess the people in rebuilt Nibelheim are just threatened to keep quiet about it, I was kind of assuming they legitimately didn't recognize Cloud because he never lived there.

But yes, this is the games actual twist: who is Cloud really and what even is Jenova?
But yes, Cloud existed prior to Hojo experimenting on him. Hojos just intentionally lying to mess with you because hes a psychopathic monster. It will all be cleared up later, and make sure to swing by the Nibelheim mansions basement before the point of no return.

Sort of. Sephiroth was directly controlling the clones so even though they weren't the "real" sephiroth you were still very much on the heels of the actions being conducted by sephiroth remotely. Secondly, everyone was to be absorbed into sephiroth. That's what the "reunion" is.

Cloud is real 100% but he failed in the SOLDIER program. After getting stabbed by sephiroth, getting mako poisoning, getting recaptured by Hojo, injected with Jenova cells, and having Zack's life force siphoned to restore him, he turned out stronger than he was before. It's unclear what Hojo's goal was, but he was probably trying to change Cloud into Sephiroth.

Tifa knew everything the whole time. It's not clear why she pretended she didn't.

Cloud's also really kind of a loser until we see him with Avalanche. He fails again and again and it seems like he's not trying too hard, but as an adult he's fairly reliable despite all his Jenova related problems.

cloud is her best friend and he shows up after years not seeing him, she didnt want do anything that could drive him away because shes scared of losing him again

TC stop being smug about "figuring" the game out and just play it. You clearly didn't figure anything out given that you needed to run to a message board to make sure you followed it and you didn't even get to the plot twist. Even 14 year old me could tell that the stuff that happens at the Reunion was a giant hook setting up the real plot twists.
