Does the turn based RPG combat get more involved? Are the sidequests as memorable as in Yakuza 0? So far (only on chapter 2) the plot is pretty good and it's got me hooked. What did you guys think?

I would think it would make the combat more interesting. I haven't played a ton of yakuza just a few demos here adn there and the combat was free flowing but pretty easy and basic and mindless imo. I don't like turn based unless it's done well though. Fallout was it for me. I tend to think it's not that engrossing but somewhere in between and more for show.

Well Ichiban is homeless now. This game certainly has lots of twists and turns with the plot. I think the Yakuza games might have some of the best writing in all of video games tbh. Most don't keep me this engaged and wanting to find out what's next.

Combat definitely gets more involved, especially once you get access to jobs.

I like ichiban so far. He's a standup guy. Just straight up took some crossbow arrows and gave a speech about keeping a local bar in business

Japanese. But I hear that the English dubs are actually really good so I might try them.

Stick with the Japanese. The English dub is good and has some really powerful scenes but theres little variety in the style of voices. They all end up sounding like the same gruff guy archetype.
I turned it on for five minutes and turned it back off lol

Yo the gamepass version crashes all the time. I went through that big brawl in the Seiryu headquarters at the end of chapter 4 and it just crashed when i got into the last fight. It sucked ass. Had to do it all over again. It will keep crashing in the middle of fights, but normally it's not a big deal because i just load up the game again and my autosave is generally right there. But damn. That sucked. And I don't think it's my computer because it's not even running hot and I'm playing the game on medium settings *shrug*

lol it was so dumb. why were all three characters the same gruff guy? especially nanba? he's sort of a mild-mannered, quiet little Japanese guy. also just the disconnect of hearing these English voices in what is literally the most Japanese setting possible was just laughable.

The English dub is fantastic and they even went to the trouble of making the lip movements match.

They've come a long way from the dub of the original Yakuza.

The fact that the scene is slightly different in English to acknowledge how absurd it is cracks me up.

I'm playing this too. It's fun, but these cutscenes are painful to watch. I mean I appreciate some of the humor (the urinator quest's dialog was hilarious) but it feels like they all talk really slow and say a lot of stuff that doesn't necessarily add to the scene. Plus I don't get why it seems to randomly switch back and forth between full voiceover dialog and text only. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

The combat is fun though

Edit: I should add, this is my first Yakuza game

Side quests are mostly unvoiced, whereas the main plot is voice acted, for the most part.

FWIW, I played most of the game with the English dub and really enjoyed it.

This is what I thought at first, but I swear I've seen several instances where it goes back and forth within the same scene. Like it will be text only, then a fight or something, and then switch to full dialog. I think the pawn shop side quest did this.

Either way, I'm enjoying it so far. I really like walking around in a city setting while doing RPG stuff, although it sometimes it feels like it's pushing me along pretty fast. Like they taught me how to do the whole recycling cans thing, but then I haven't had another chance to do it and I'm not even living in the homeless camp anymore.

Just go at your own pace, and you don't have to do all the side quests. Pick and choose what you enjoy.

As for dialogue going slow, I always read through it fast. Even the voiced stuff I will press the next dialogue box button and keep it moving. I do this in every game though. I generally don't like sitting through voice acting.

I'm in chapter 5. The game keeps opening up and giving you more and more things to do. Very fun, and the plot still has me hooked.
