And both HP films were probably the most accurate adaptations in the franchise.

What the hell happened with Percy Jackson then?

Producers, writers etc.

There's an entire section of Rick Riordan's website where he critiqued the script and suggested changes but they ignored him.

They wanted to chase the teen drama market, not make it for families.

Was gonna say. Like how Disney's Narnia was desperately trying to capture that LotR acclaim/success with all the wrong moves and wrong reasons, they tried to do the same with Percy Jackson to be the next Harry Potter.

The Percy Jackson stories were definitely too "kiddy" to make into the epic mega franchise to ensnare teens that HP was. The books are a lot more young adult, emphasis on young, and mainly for a middle school audience. That doesn't translate well to a Hollywood blockbuster without them making changes accordingly.

Heck while I only bothered to skim the first movie, if I remember right they once again went with the "oh let's make Hades the villain" option except without a hilarious James Woods performance, instead of the much more interesting titan Kronos twist from the books.

And a similar attempt at a teen/tween audience was done with cirque du freak which was even more sad/laughable since they probably hoped to cash in on the vampire craze at the time and it performed so poorly that I don't think anyone even remembers or knows they made this movie. I didn't bother seeing that one.
