In upcoming research, scientists will attempt to show the universe has consciousness. Yes, really. No matter the outcome, well soon learn more about what it means to be consciousand which objects around us might have a mind of their own.

This is where a philosophical stance called panpsychism comes into play, writes All About Spaces David Crookes:
This claims consciousness is inherent in even the tiniest pieces of matter an idea that suggests the fundamental building blocks of reality have conscious experience. Crucially, it implies consciousness could be found throughout the universe.

Its also where physics enters the picture. Some scientists have posited that the thing we think of as consciousness is made of micro-scale quantum physics events and other spooky actions at a distance, somehow fluttering inside our brains and generating conscious thoughts.

Wait....this sounds familiar.

We must stop this guy from making Nerv

I dont see how it isnt. Sure we only have evidence of one planet (Earth) with conscious beings in an unimaginably vast universe but why else would matter form complex conscious brains if there were literally no trace of consciousness within those atoms.

Yes you can say it was just lucky chance over billions of years but individual atoms dont care about time.

(This doesnt mean a specific religion is right about the nature of the universe, obviously.)

I dont know. It seems very unlikely that someone would just suddenly prove out of nowhere with no fanfare except a Popular Mechanics article that the universe is conscious, so I didnt read it. If we were on the verge of that, I think itd be much bigger news.

There is 0 content in that article.

Rocks do not have a neural net powered by electricity, so they are not conscious. Are your toenails conscious? No. Only brains are conscious, and maybe some advanced AIs.

Maybe even giant fungi, plants, and sponges.

God damn that was a dumb fucking article.

also, a conscious universe doesn't necessarily have any control over its parts, any more than you can control one of the bacteria in your gut. so, claims of divinity fall even further down the road of possibilities.

I dont think this person is very convincing. They didnt bring forth any evidence of electrons, to take an example of theirs, being conscious. They sort of assume that an electron has an experience, but thats it.

You cant look inside an electron to see whether or not it is conscious. But nor can you look inside someones head and see their feelings and experiences.

This seems like a false equivalence. I dont need to see someones feelings and experiences to know theyre conscious.

You don't have to convert to Christianity over this, but I think ecosystems are more or less proof that something is up.

I mean animals and vegetation evolve simultaneously for the benefit of one another without instinctive awareness of their position in the grand scheme of things. Predators don't think, "I'm here to prevent overpopulation." They think, "I'm hungry." The same is true of scavenger birds and bugs which remove what's left of carcasses. Why would a cactus store liquid within it for the benefit of humans to carve into?

hmmm. well, over time the animals that are more effective at satisfying "i am hungry" end up eating more and thereby procreating more.

so their genetics pass onwards, and that is how they become more specialized. because they are more effective due to how they operate in whatever environment they're in. some animals have better gills or flight or toxicity. homo sapiens has self awareness or whatever it is that makes us human. i guess the ability to think at the highest levels of abstraction in this dimension, since we can manipulate it so effectively nowadays.

i think the probability of this universe existing at all is effectively 0 and that to me is proof of there being a mind behind it. a disembodied mind. i do think william lane craig was 100% right. :) and the Islamic scholars before him who argued the kalaam cosmological argument.
