Essentially, it's saying you should just believe in God just in case. But you can't just force yourself to believe in something. You either believe or you don't. Pascal's Wager is saying to try to....fool God I guess, if he exists. He would know you were faking it though.

Because of this I've always consider Pascal's Wager to be bullshit. No real athiest would ever consider it. It's something only a person who already believed would ever think makes any sense

it also doesn't make sense because it's presented as flipping a coin. but it's not. it's the wheel of robots wheel from futurama.

It was the middle ages they didn't have much to work with in terms of philosophy

Pascal was a better mathematician than a philosopher

It also assumes there's only one correct God to believe in.

It also assumes there's only one correct God to believe in.

Technically it would still work with multiple possible gods since the odds of getting 1 right out of X is still better than getting them all wrong. The bigger flaw is that it assumes all wrong choices are equally bad. Hypothetically there could be a religion where believing in another god gets you put in a worse hell than not believing in anything, whereas the "wager" assumes you're no worse off picking a "wrong" god than picking no god.

My aunt tried using that argument on me, not that I think she knows who Pascal is.

It's weird how much credence it's given by Christian apologists when there are so many flaws with it. I think people just like the sound of it, despite the fact that it doesn't stand up to scrutiny.
