I was an Army Brat and moved a lot. We had some houses with daylight basements. But only one house I think, in Pennsylvania had a true basement. I used to be scared to be down there by myself. My brothers room was down there and if he was there it was okay but I remember if I went down to play video games and he wasn't there, I had to take my dog to feel OK or I'd be freaked out

Yep, almost all my friends hand their video games down there. We spent tons of time in the basement.

Yes, super creepy like an RPG dungeon. I was always on edge but I still went down there to look around a lot as a kid

No, they're extremely uncommon here.

My grandparents had a potion of the 1st floor of their house underground and they had a ton of problems with it flooding every so often when it rained a lot.

My childhood house was built into the side of a hill so while the lower level had a ground entry at the front, it was fully under ground at the back of the house.

My current house has a real basement. It's great in the summer because it's much cooler down there during the day.

They probably didn't have a sump pump.

actual house, yeah, but it was (and still is) unfinished and gross. sitter's house had the playroom in the basement, though, so i spent a lot of my childhood mornings there.

sumps are only required when the mains are above the basement floor. Some neighbourhoods have this, my parents' being one of them. Where I live now, however, the mains are below the basement floor, and thus no pump is required.

The house I grew up in has a basement and if you're over 5'8 or so it's very uncomfortable to walk around in. Apparently during prohibition it was used to smuggle alcohol under the road and to the river where a boat would take it away. I've also heard that it was used as part of the underground railroad but I'm not sure about that.

Yes and it was filled with junk and cobwebs and a toilet recessed in the wall that looked like something out of Resident Evil. And it was the only toilet in the house until I was in middle school and I was so terrified of going down there that they had to have a plastic potty for me when I was really little. And it was my older siblings duty to empty it and one time my dad came home and whipped it, full of waste, at my sister because no one had dumped it yet.

House I lived inn until I was 5 was a ranch that had no basement

The other house had a furnished sub-level, but wasn't really a "basement"

So... no.

My great grandmother's basement was like that. It was all cinder block with peeling paint and dim lights. Dust and spider webs were everywhere.

She was a low key hoarder. The house itself looked nice, but the basement was filled with old newspapers from the 1930s up, food in mason jars that turned into mush, boxes of old letters and post cards, random vintage canned food that rusted over. Not sure why we'd play down there during visits.

Yes. I loved it because it was always cold.

Even now i prefer to stay in my basement game room because it is always so cold even in the summer. I save a bundle on AC because i rarely need to turn it on.
