How many among CE can cook well?

I try to make everything from scratch, but it certainly isn't cheaper. To make good food you need good ingredients and they aren't always cheap. You usually can make A+ meals for less than you pay for at a restaurant but only because of yield. I can also make meals with bullshit in the cabinets even without basic protein if the veggies are fresh. Today was penne pasta with a sauce I made with canned crushed tomatoes(stick with me) oregano and basil; first I sauteed the mushrooms in RAW butter. I added garlic and pepper. THen I realized I was a fuckwit

Because I hadn't bought onions. OOF. Anyways I continued and sliced some fresh garlic for the sauce, which was two can of crushed tomatoes and some pepper with the aforementioned oregano and basil. I added a little red wine vinegar and brown sugar to round out the taste, then more garlic I had just cut. Then I started cooking the ground beef (90% lean) and added the mushrooms I had been sauteeing into the sauce. Continued to season and just sort of tune into the season, then ground beef goes in after a bit and spicing that as well. Water is now boiling for the noodles.

I let everything hang so my dry herbs can go to work and the garlic has room to stretch its legs in the sauce. Once again I realize storebought red sauce is horse shit and 90% of the work is the tomato. I bought some mozarella marinated in hatch chiles to keep it interesting and when the noodles are done I served it. Lady exclaims it's my best dish in the red pasta realm and I huzzah inwardly. And this was with kroger ingredients that cost sub-30$ and have enough for 6 more entrees.

TLDR; I can cook my dick off and did tonight. I don't think it's a shame not to cook, but it's a pretty easy skill to start getting feet wet in and everyone should. We all eat, usually more than once a day. Good food transcends nourishment and adds value to life.

What I make tastes really good, and everyone agrees, but it never looks good, so some people don't want to even try

I don't want to give myself too much credit. I can put some really tasty meals together. I could even cook for people with decent success.

I have worked in a vegan kitchen before but I love cooking with beef, chicken and fish. I can hold my own if I'm cooking but I can't stand sharing kitchen space, especially if it's a small kitchen.

Dude what I made didn't look great either lol, I'm not some artist who 'plates' well. Taste and texture are everything. Fuck em, the look of food is so overrated. Like I know we both COULD plate it better but I'm much more focused on the actual cooking.

This makes sense considering I have you tagged as 'reasonable human'.

With the vegan stuff did you constantly have to second guess your instincts for basic stuff, and 2 did your knowledge gained transfer over once you left to cooking overall?

pretty good cook compared to my peers, who are still primarily eat take-out/boxed pre-made frozen food.

Proper cooking proficiency adds a solid number to the attractiveness scale. turns 5's to 6's, 0's to 1's, 10's to 11's.

To be honest, it exposed me to many ingredients I never would have ever used and spice combinations that never would have crossed my mind. Seasoning jackfruit with taco spices to make tacos that vegans would enjoy. Honey chipotle brussle sprouts that are baked to be crispy and spicy-sweet.

Meat is usually the star of the show and I love a nice, properly seasoned slab of meat. Also having to cook for a vegan girlfriend forced me to be creative with flavors and ingredients on a nightly basis. Taking meat out of the equation leaves lots of room for experimentation. Almonds or peanuts are added to the cabbage and olive oil to give a hearty crunch as well as protein.

I think it's a different mindset, kind of similar to how you would cook for yourself vs. cooking for others.

I can cook well enough but I'm not Gordon Ramsay or anything. I have mediocre cooking instincts, if I try to cook something out of my creativity, it's gonna taste bad 50% of the time but if I follow a recipe, it's gonna be good 95% of the time

^ I do MUCH better on my own, tbh. I'll look at what they say to do, and then just make it up. 4 TBS of this, one cup of that, fuck all that noise. Just tell me what should go in it, I'll take what I like and not use the shit I don't, lol

But I've been cooking for some vegans at work, so that's let me explore more ideas, but I still just do what I want

I usually make one big meal every Sunday and eat on it most of the week. I like one-pot meals that have everything. Stuff like chicken casserole, beef stew, shrimp scampi, bean soup, chili, chicken mole with rice.

I find it easier to one-pot than trying to get all your protein and vegetables separately, plus there's less to clean up.

I can decently throw stuff together, and I can follow a recipe well. I'm not that great at cooking meats, though. Like I could never do a steak or some bullshit like that (not that i'd want to anyways), and I'm not the best at frying fish/chicken.

I'm the primary cook in the house, which I dont mind at all. I try to cook at least one new thing a week and thats what I really enjoy; trying new things or learning a technique.
I even enjoy washing dishes which many think is weird. I just really enjoy my time in the kitchen or out on the grills and smokers, end to end I guess.

so ya I think I can cook fairly well.

I love to cook, relaxing and a lot of joy in it for me.

Girlfriend cooks like DOGSHIT. I love her but she has absolutely no flair for it at all. After we started dating she basically quit cooking altogether. She made something with eggplant the first week we were in the house and it was supposed to be grilled aka charred and such and she went "Well it'll be fine in the oven right? :)"

It wasn't. Inedible.

Just make sure that if you are going to cook salmon you don't put it in the freezer. If you do, it can end up looking like a bison's penis according to chef Ramsay.
