as part of my responsibilities, i do monthly data analysis updates on an ongoing project. we're pretty late in the process on this month's as the due date is in 1 hour.

however, right before submitting the analysis for final approval, i noticed an error done by someone in the graphics department. they got one of the data points wrong in one of the graphs

i tell my supervisor (acting supervisor, he's actually just my peer because our boss is on medical leave) to verify and he says im right...but tells me to leave it and we'll fix it next month

i tell him im not comfortable giving out false data when i present this data to the stakeholders (as well as blast emailing it to many many people) and if one persons asks about the discrepancy (i have to compare month to month data and my analysis would directly contradict what the graph shows) i will have compromised the integrity of our entire operation

even worse, this error actually occurred last month, while this guy was doing the analysis (i was on a another urgent project) and he didnt catch it

so i ask if we can get a second opinion and loop in his direct supervisor...who tells us to contact graphics and have it changed and we'll just send everything out late

oops...

Do you get tired of making things up or is it a fun little game you play with yourself?

Is that all they do? Are they engineers?

It is kinda weird yes. Pretty sure you can pay them to work on actual projects and make powerpoints and schematics at the same time. I believe infact most companies do this.

as mentioned, it's the really really really advanced stuff that goes into presentations to stakeholders and the public

for example, i do the graphics you mention. it's very common for me, but that's simple excel graphs and stuff

these guys do the graphs you pull out for high end business meetings

i could do their job, but it would literally take all 40 hours of my week, and then i wouldnt be developing my skill set as much and my chances of rising up in the ranks would diminish (when they want succession planning)
